79 gas mileage
 

Hey this is my first time submitting a question, but just wondered if any one knew if there is a big difference in gas mileage between an 79 F-250 and 350 4x4 standard cab my dad used to own a 76 ford that he made look more like a 79 and used it mainly to spray our fields with, when we moved he sold it. I also didnt know if anyone knew how much better gas mileage an older 7.3L diesel f-250 or 350 might have and the difference between the two. I also realize that in the gas the engine matters so how about a 390 comparison and also a 460, I hope Im making sense and thanks for your comments

OK 1st post so I will go easy and welcome to the forum.

Those 2 truck's would get the same exact mileage depending on if they have the same motor, trans and gear's.

What year are you talking about? They did not offer a diesel from the factory in the 73-79 F-series.

I would think the 460 would use more gas than an FE motor but not a 100% sure.

The diesel would get the best gas milage than any of then. It uses diesel. Sorry couldn't pass that up.

Austin, I think more about power than fuel milage so I'm sorry I'm help.

I have had 4 f-series trucks,mpg as follows:1984-f150 300 4-sp overdrive--about 17mpg
1973-f100 360 2bbl,AT low geared --about 10mpg
1979-F150 4x4 351m,AT,3:50gears,33's--about 10mpg
1990-f350 dually,4dr,460 AT overdrive,4:10--about 10mpg


These are averages,not on interstate at 55.---The dually once got 13,empty,4 adults on interstate.

My little contour once got 41mpg on a downhill stretch on i-40 but EVERYDAY average,no interstate,is about 26mpg.

Considering the FACT there are so many variables regarding fuel economy it would be hard to get a specific answer.

Things to consider:
1)Quality of Fuel
2)Additives
3)Tune & Efficiency of Engine
4)Altitude
5)Driving technique
6)Topography where you are driving
7)How much city/how much highway driving
8)Gear ratio & size of tires
9)Weight of the vehicle
10)Tire inflation
11)Vehicle design (drag)
12)Clean air filter

Just to name a few.

I drive a 78 pickup with a well tuned 429 engine,at an altitude of 3400 ft above sea level,with normal weight on the truck with a canopy,tires inflated to spec,using premium fuel,2.75 rear,C6 Trans, With my foot on the pedal like there was a egg under it, in Canada in a city that the downtown is located in a valley.

I get 14 city & 18-19 hwy.
