Lock Cylinder won't Turn
 

Hey All,
Got a problem.After driving the F150 the other day,with no problems,and after parking it, I got in it last nite to drive it,and the key won't turn the lock cylinder. Nobody's driven it for a week,and it has sat in the same place for a week.I've tried every key I've got,and the all worked before. HELP! Any ideas??

Try to spray some silicone or dry graphite in the lock cylinder. If that does not work, open the other door and open the problem door from inside. pull the cylinder and see if the mechanism is stuck or take the cylinder to a lock smith.

I'm sorry,I should have been more specific.The lock cylinder in question is the ignition lock cylinder.I can't start or move the truck 'cuz the ignition key won't turn in the cylinder to the start and run position.

Put the key in....grab the shifter handle and pull it up into the park position for and automatic trans. Try to be sure there is not tension on the lock with the steering wheel - wheels turned out on a grade.

As Fastronald said your steering wheel is wedged to one side - sit down and grab your steering wheel and crank it one way and try to turn your key - If that dont work try to crank the wheel the other way and turn you key at the same time - Good Luck -Tim

The wheels aren't under stress,I made sure of that when I parked it.They are straight with no turning involved.They are not against a curb or rise in the ground.I tried the shifter trick,to no avail. I have sprayed WD-40 in the cylinder and am going to leave it set overnite. I am gonna jack the truck up tomorrow to make sure the tension is completely off the wheels. I'm afraid the cylinder took a dump on me with no warning and now I can't get it to the position where I can change it out. I'm willing to listen to anymore suggestions you may have so as not to have to take the steering column apart. Thanks!!

Got a similar problem in our Bronco, just started. Seems like the key will go in OK, but is stiff sometimes to turn. As is the steering wheel all of a sudden, Sometimes the problem is there, sometimes not. I've felt sticky lock cylinders before and it seems like something more than just that. Maybe a jamming wheel-locking mechanism? I dunno..

:-huh Ok this is how a Ford F series truck steering colum works. On my old 1994 F150 you can put the key in the ignition - you need to remove the plastic cover that surrounds the bottom of your colum. Look very closly and you will see a little pin - its about the size of a pen tip - use a small device such as a small phillips screwdriver and push in on the pin - you will need to make sure you have the key turned just slightly in the running direction. As you depress the pin pull your key out and your entire ignition will slide out. You can go get a new on from a Ford dealer for $200.00 or an aftermarket one for about $100.00 at your local parts store. This whole process is very easy but it wont work if you cannot get your key to move slightly. Its best if you have the key turned as far as you can twards the run position. Will that work on an 88 F-150,or must I take the steering wheel off.Mine does not have plastic directly under the key lock,it is metal. I am able to move the key slightly,sometimes even have the steering wheel unlock.

Keep trying to wiggle the key in the ignition cylinder,the ignition cylinder or the key can possibly be worn.I think most of the ignition cylinders are removed in a similiar way dating back into the 80's. Bob

If its a double cut key (teeth on both sides) insert it the other way. If your keychain makes you insert it the same way all the time, 1 side of the key may have worn. The other side may be ok. I know - crazy idea, but try it. :)

I want to thank everyone for all the ideas,hints,and tips.I tried them all,but to no avail.I had to call in professional help.When the locksmith got there,it took him two hours to complete the job,cuz he had to drill out the lock cylinder.He said it was one of the most worn out lock cylinders he'd ever had to deal with.
That's the bad news.The good news is.... I GOT MY TRUCK BACK,YAHOOO!!!
