riding in the bed of a truck, illeagal?

I see a lot of people riding around in the bed of trucks..and about half of the people i ask say it is illeagal, so wouldnt they get pulled over for it? Or is it not illeagal? just curious.

depends on local code. here in burlington you have to be at least 12 to ride in the back.

Don't do it in Marengo, they will give you a ticket called clinging to a motor vehicle, I had thought it was a state thing, but it may be at the local officer's discretion to ticket or not.

I'm pretty sure the State of Nebraska has outlawed this, except for in parades. I remember seeing something on the news about it back in July. I sometimes wonder how I've made it to 37, there weren't nearly enough laws protecting me when I was a kid :-rip

No Way!

I had always thought as long as the passengers were sitting ON THE FLOOR of the box ( not the wheel well ) it was ok...Oh well. I suppose the beer I had back there was illegal too....who knew?

just did a search and found this web site showing the current laws on passengers in the cargo area of light trucks. As I see it Iowa has no law regarding this.

Apparently there a re a few ging ho cops out there that will bend the rules their way then, as I knoe of some that have been busted for the aforementioned violation. They were in the back of a pickup, and it got them ticketed.

monsterbaby 09-15-2004 07:21 PM

actually I read the Iowa laws on seatbelts to only include front seat passengers, so if a cop writes a ticket on passengers in the back seat it is invalid with the exception of anyone under 10yrs of age must be seatbelted in, no matter where they are sitting. So if the ones you are talking about were under 10 that could be the reason.

fellro86 09-15-2004 07:49 PM

Nope, late teens, riding around town it the back of a pickup, just hanging out and having fun, not hurting anyone. We have a tendencey to have cops there that like to pick on the kid, intimidation factor. I had a go round with a few, doesn't help when you go to court for it and they won't let the kids up to testify because "why would the cop lie?" Too bad the judges don't have to be elected like they are here, tick off enough people and be looking for a job.

yeah i heard the have seatbelt law for the back seat they can be ticketed

I just talked to my next door neighbor who is a cop here in town and both my uncles who are deptys they told me that you can ride in the back of the truck as long as you are doing it safely . If a cop don't "think" you are not riding safely then he can ticket you

monsterbaby 10-03-2004 07:56 PM

gotta love those if the cop "thinks" things, kinda like the speed limit law in Montana (not sure if this has been changed or not but is the way when they first put the no speed limit law in) everyone thought there was no speed limit, but it actually was whatever speed the officer "thinks" is safe in other words of you are doing 65mph in rain the officer can give you a ticket for speeding even though the old speed limit was 65mph he determined it wasn't safe, so if his wife ran off with some guy that drives a red mustang, he might just give speeding tickets to every red mustang he sees no matter how fast they are going, and it will stick because all he has to say in court was he thought it was to fast, know how do you fight that?

Bust out a topographical map, and file with the National Weather Service for that day. Show the judge the terrain you were in at the time of being pulled over, as well as the weather results from that day and state your case. A REASONABLE person ought to be swayed. And if you were in curves...um...you should have had you corvette anyways? ^_^
