little ford car questions

I am looking for a little buzz box to use as little gas as possible since its 2 bucks a gallon. my nephew had a little early 90's festiva that ran really nice, but his dingy girlfriend blew it up (no water) before i or he got a chance to really see what kinda car they are.

it did run nice with good get up and go go...

I would like to know is the engine in this ford (with proper care) a good long serving trooper and what kinda gas milage do they get?

I have a 65 250, it gets @9 MPG... and my little nissan PU mule is loosing compression (old age... 300k miles maybe more) and since I wont need a little pu to zip around (I have the big pig if something needs hauled) I figure hey, why not another ford?
BUT i want one thats as spartan and user freindly as the old FE... I didnt see much under the hood of my nephews...

a great deal of my daily running i never haul nothing but my butt.

input, suggestions and advice on festiva (or is it fiesta? I think thats an older model little ford aint it?)

anything I should watch out for shopping for one?

THANKS!

Sorry, but car discussion doesn't belong in the truck sections.
