more MPG out of a V10

Hello,

I have a coworker that wishes he could get more MPG out of his V10.

I am not trying to get into any brand wars (he has a Dodge), but generaly speaking, whats there for options?

Thanks for your help...

Power is easy to build in a V10. MPG please....No know sure fire ways. Driving style and overall weight of the vehicle are BIG factors.

rvpuller 07-19-2004 09:31 PM

Do I understand that he has a Dodge V10 If so I Think he is out of luck they are gas Hogs:-X13 His best bet would to get a Ford V10 :)

MountainHound 07-19-2004 09:57 PM

Yeah. If he has a Dodge V10 you have to understand the Ford V10 is a completely different animal. The Ford V10 is a modern 6.8L and the Dodge V10 is an older design 8.0L, so there's alot of difference in engine size for starters.

I've known a few guys who have/had Dodge V10s and none of them ever saw double digits for mileage. It was introduced in the early 1980s and is a low-revving, gas-sucking torque monster. The last version listed for 2003 commercial Dodge trucks was rated at 305hp/440lb-ft. Tell your pal not to bother wasting his $$ to get better mileage out of-it ain't gonna happen. The best way, like the other guy just said, is to change driving habits-keep the RPM under 2000, stay in OD as much as possible, avoid stop-n-go driving. Also start off easy from stop lights and eliminate as much weight as is feasible.

Driving my Ford V10 in that manner is the difference between me getting 10.5mpg and 12.5mpg for mixed driving. If I stay in OD on the highway I get over 14 easily and have gotten 15 on a few trips when I traveled at a constant speed long-distance. That's good mileage for a gas engine in a 6800lb pickup.

What MountainHounda said + keep the tires at max PSI.

krewat 07-20-2004 11:56 AM

Take the V10 and wrap it in a Mustang or other small car - VOILA! Better MPG...

:)

rvpuller 07-20-2004 01:10 PM

No that won't work for better milage, right foot to heavy tires would not last for maybe 10 gal or less

:-wow i guess i shouldbe happy i even got this truck .i knew whattoexpect from a 04 f-350 singer wheele fx4 auto c.c. 340 lim. and one size larger i have 0004342.7 miles qn it nowtes pulling abass boat 250 miles to lake fork texass i got 9.4 mpg. with myfoot and on cruse on the way back and still got 9.4!!in town it stayed the same. got my 1st oil change at 0004000.0 and now one week later im down to 8.6 mpg . no i dont keep my foot in i drive it like ill need it for 500,000.0 miles im going to the shop the 28th of july to see what they say and it, better not say its my driving habats.. for i dont drive it hard. alot of what i reed i think might some have been streched some and sometll ewhat ever. any heave any idea why this is happening?????

gmsux 07-24-2004 09:24 AM

I'm trying to understand your question, are you deliberately misspelling and using bad grammer? I hope so. Did your oil change involve putting 5w20 back into the engine or did something thicker get put in? Thicker oil will cause more fuel consumption...

I have tried hevier oils and never seen a MPG change, right now I am running 20-50 for the summer and my MPG is the same as it has been.

battered_bronco 07-24-2004 04:25 PM

geez give me a hard question...
pick 2 or 4 clinders and pull the spark plugs and dis-connect the fuel injectors(the plug not fuel line)
next

Why in hell's name would you put a heavier oil in an '04? You are going to blow your warranty and any hopes of fuel conservation. Go back to the factory recommended 5w-20 or you are toast!!

m350 07-24-2004 06:33 PM

I would not run 20-50 oil in my 04' V-10 !! Now why would you do that ?? I know 5-20 seems thin to what we use to run 20 yrs ago,,but man this is a new engine ment to run on 5-20,,,thats what they recomend, not 20-50 ,do what ya want I guess.

Later,,,,,,,,,,Mark

battered_bronco 07-25-2004 04:25 AM

these all are tight tolence motors if you built a "old" style motor to the same tolerences you would use 5-20 oil in them too like some race cars
basiclly i would say your just grinding your cams down guess that will save gas (if your valves don't open as far)
i would say if your having a oil pressure problem and its hot try 5w30 or in bad cases 10w-30

i am not suited to a new verihickle if i had oiling problems with an `04 i would wax it up real good and shove it up the dealer's...well you get the point

jad0620 07-25-2004 10:22 PM

well i guess to many cold ones and 6am is a bad time to post. my question is,anyone else out there getting 9 MPG with the v10? i dont drive it hard and after my 1st oil change at 4000 miles i'm down to 8.6 mpg. sorry for the last post.i'll hold my questions untill i recover and sleep it off next time.

Loyd Lucas 07-26-2004 04:27 PM

jad0620, you need to put your right foot on a diet and lighten it up. I averaged 8.7 MPG for 2990 miles pulling a 9000 pound trailer along flat highways and up and down mountain passes.

jasontrucks76 08-17-2004 11:57 AM

Hey guys I agree that MPG is not real good with the V-10 But the fact is if you have a 10,000 square foot house you cant complain about the cost of heating it :'( YOU HAVE A 10,000 SQUARE FOOT HOUSE!!! And the same goes for us I get around 10MPG with a 2002 F-250 CC SD 4x4 3.73s and thats the way it is I HAVE A V-10!!! Now Im not trying to start anything but their are hundreds of posts on MPG and they all say the same thing. We injoy and reserve the rite to pull 10k trailers up hill bolth ways and all the while passing someone we have to stop at the pumps !!
I dont know thats just my opinion and Ive been told to keep it to myself from time to time so feel free :-X22
Take Care and enjoy

foot off the gas

I have been building a house for a guy in Victor ID so i drive from Alpine Wy through Jackson and over Teton Pass (10% grade ) I am getting 13.3mpg, the computer said 13.3 so I did the math the next two fill ups and believe it or not 13.3&13.5. I drive 55-62mph not 65-70 .Also I have been putting in premium fuel since that pinging drove me nuts. Well it doesn't ping at all anymore. Not bad for a 99 250 with 295/75/16 tires. Quick question does anyone know if the newer style pull out cup holder fits in my 99?and do the fog lights fit in the 99 holes ? i see the light switch pulls out for the fogs if so wher could i get them thanks Rob

camo4stealth 08-20-2004 03:18 PM

Wow, I pull a 4,200 lb. boat all over the Idaho hills at 70 mph and average a bit over 11mpg. The worst I ever got was with the camper and boat into a head wind and got 9. 70 and just about floored in 5th gear.

labwillow 08-20-2004 06:12 PM

I run 35's on my 7500lb V10 F350 with a heavy right foot more often that not and I pull a trailer 9 times out of ten with a total truck and trailer gvw between 16-2000lbs and I averaged 10.4 mpg in the last tax year. I am running 4.30 gears. The only performance upgrade is a custom loud dual exaust. :)

strokr02 09-22-2009 05:52 PM

I have a 99 v10 reg. Cab long box with 147,000 and an 8" lift with 37 inch tires that generally gets between 10&11 absolutly love the truck.. And at the same time i have a 06 psd dually with the same lift and tires, i only get 1 mpg better with the diesel and the warranty ford is so chicken **** about their 6.0 diesel warranty mine has 51000 on it and a blown motor ford is trying not to warranty total p.o.s. So stick with the v10 all the way

F-350 Crew V-10

I considering buying an F-350 V10 CC non-dually. What I've seen is that about 10-15mpg is going to be expected on freeway driving if you don't get stuck in traffic. Few question: First, what is the typical longevity of a V10 as compared to saw a 7.3L Diesel? Someone mentioned removing spark and injector wires on a couple or four cylinders to get better mileage. So second question, has anyone tried this? Is that bad for the rig? Thinking about firing order I would think it would cause problems since the it would not have the added power to rotate at certain angles. Uneven wear maybe and possibly even engine block issues based on heat or lack of expected heat expansion on cylinders not firing.

Longevity wise, if you take care of them, they last up into the 200K mile mark easily.

As for removing COP or injector wires to improve MPGs, don't do that. The pumping loss of compressing air without producing power will make it a wash.

We had someone here a couple of years ago go and try to induce the "limp" mode where the V10 runs on only 5 cylinders when it gets too hot, thinking it would make his mileage better. We never heard back from him, and I'd think we would have if it did anything.

bill11012 10-07-2009 09:20 PM

running a V10 on 5 cylinders? WOW, If I said what I thought about that you would have to edit my post to clean it up.

I think they'll last longer than that... i currently have 160+ on my 01 and don't see it dying in the next 40k - I could be wrong, but my gut feeling is that this thing will 300k without a problem. At the rate I'm going, I'll know in about 1.5 years.

BTW, I typically get 10-12 mpg city and 14-16 on the highway. I've found I get my best hiway mpgs running at about 68 mph where the RPGs are just at 2000 (using cruise control). Towing - pulling my 7700# TT, wife, 2 kids and the pug, 2200 miles from NC to Texas I averaged 9.8, with a hi of 10.5 and low of 7.8 in the mountains.
