2003 6.0 will not turn over
I have a 2003 f250 6.0 auto with 19,500 miles. For the last several thousand miles it occasionally will not turn over when trying to start. Exactly as if you tried to start it in drive or reverse. The problem is getting worse, two, three, four times a day lasting 20+ minutes. Seems to turn over after cooling. Dealer had it for 5 days and can't figure it out...or spell the word Ford. Any help would be great as well as info on who to contact at Ford to complain about our local Ford shop here in Idaho.

I've personally have never heard of this problem on the 6.0 Diesel. Though this was a problem in older fords/chevys.
What happens is the starter gets too hot from being close to the exhaust. On occasion it can get so hot it will not turn over and there for once it cools down for 30 monutes it will start up fine. So drive the truck hard on your way to the dealer to get that starter heated up. Then pull in shut it down, get a tech, and see if it starts, if it doesnt its that darn starter. If it does start your looking at a sensor or loose connections. Hope this helps. :) |

Sad, they cannot figure this out...how did you find FTE?

I have a buddy in Vancouver who said this forum could solve most problems. I hate to take it back to the dealer, they cause more problems then they solve, but it looks like I'll have too. It is a shame that a person can buy a $10,000 used truck and it will run years without a problem, pay $38+K just so you can make lotsa friends at the service department. Warranty or not - it is a hassle. I've had three new Chevy's and a Dodge that spent most of their first six months in the shop. I realize that with a million things that can go wrong many things will. It's sad that Chevy and Dodge had such poor service departments that they could not fix a problem. I switched to Ford to prevent this, my mistake. Thanks for the help! Next step is to take this to the dealer and teach them how to fix things. P.S. I ask the dealer to check out this site before working on my truck so they would have a clue - apparently they did not.

This issue could be something very simple, difficult to detect but simple to fix.
It is a pain however these are mass produced trucks, so take it in and see what happens. Tell us what happens. This is a new problem for us also…………so it will help if we all know the outcome. |

Mine would intermittently 'NO CRANK' several times a day, and was getting worse (only 200 miles on the clock then).. Stranded me for 10-15 minutes at times.. And only as warming up, or hot.. It was the starter.. Not the relay/solenid.. It just happened to fail when it was in for a rear main repair.. Hope this helps... ...........................HP..................... ......... |
Maybe it would help if we knew what he was driving.
Build date would be nice. Maybe he has a chaffed wire that hasn't quite made solid contct yet. Or the plug, that I can never remember which it is, that needs to be unpluged. Could be as simple a the key switch. If it is intermittent you might check the steering collum to see if it is getting hot. FYI: Ford is spelled F O R D in case your service dealer needs a refresher. Man...Idaho...can't have to many dealer options there. Good luck. Do they have any certified diesel techs @ your dealer? |
