Ford 300 vs. Dodge 360

alright i have this moron friend who has 96 Ram with a 360. All he ever does is bad mouth fords. HE always brags how he has thisi big ass 5.9L 360ci dodge engine. He tells me how im stupid for getting the legendary 300, he tells me 6 cylinder engines do not belong in trucks. He tells me how his dodge will last forever and how my ford with 143k is gonna give me nothin but problems. He has only 83k miles on his truck and he has problems all the time. In your opinion what do u think is a better engine? Which is better for towing, hauling, and durability. Plus give me somethin to say to him that will put his dodge down and realize that dodges SUCK!

dodges SUCK!:-X09

jessfactor 02-26-2004 09:11 PM

well his engine has way more power that yours, but its a big V8. he probably gets like 10 mpg's. i think the 5.9 is a nice engine, but its impractical for daily driving. the straight six gets great fuel efficiency, but will haul when you want it too.

does your friend realize that the cummins diesel in the dodge ram's is a 5.9 straight six? also, almost every tractor trailer is a straight six. the inline six is a real truck engine, not a V8. do you think a V8 will haul 80,000 lbs haha. say "what are those two extra cylinders in your truck for? i'll bet you can out pull all those 18 wheelers w/the straight six's (say it sarcasticly)"

print these pages out for him.

stick w/ your 300-6...it'll give you double the miles you have currently, with the proper care and maintainence, and a few rebuilds if you want...it'll have all the pulling power you'll ever want, even if you don't have the horsepower of a v-8...the 300 has been around for 40+ years...there must be a reason for it...obviously it is a good motor, or it would not have lasted that long...granted, the dodge 360 is a good motor...my uncle loves his, and it's a 70-some with, i believe 200,000+ miles...but it has been well maintained and taken care of...all the 360 is, tho, is a bored-out 318...just some thoughts of mine...i love the 300...it's an awesome motor that will generally give you more in longevity than you could ever dream....

Dodge sucks and needs to die! They should start making go-karts or something, and putting their engines in them.

I see a bunch of kids here... Brand loyalty is for the birds...

As for our origional poster, I'll bet if your friend had the 300 powered Ford and you had the Dodge, he'd be bragging about the 300... Some people are like that, just ignore it, it's not worth getting worked up over.
Properly maintained, both engines will probably last just as long.

desperado_18_2000 03-16-2004 07:04 PM

I wouldn't worry about what he says, we all know the 300 is a great engine, and the dodge 360, is ok. I've worked on plenty of both of them.

Best way to shut him up is ignore it, because it really isn't worth getting bothered over.

Keep the oil changed, tuned up, and maybe a few speed parts added, and don't worry about his bucket mouth....just smile & wave as you pass.

I'm sure the 360 is a stronger motor.

The 300 is great, i love mine to death, but that doesn't make it invincable. Its great for 300ci. Now if the 360 is great for 360ci, well its got that 60 cubes on the 300.

What the 300 lacks in power (and this only due to its size when compared to the other, bigger v8 truck motors) it makes up for in longevity and loyalty. What a great motor.

I'm gunna feel bad if i end up swapping in the 460... but probably only for a little while :D

The 300 should be in a ranger. }>

Big 6 is better. Dodge 360 is a good motor, but the 6 is way more reliable. My dad's has over 200,000, and I know a guy with over 350,000 miles, w/o a rebuild.

RiveraD123 03-16-2004 11:38 PM

the 360 is not just a bored out 318, the 318 has a stroke of 3.31, the 360 is 3.58, the bore on a 318 is 3.94, and the 360's bore is 4.00, its alot different, I love dodge, and I like ford just as much, I just cant get enough my my f-150 4x4 5 spd. the 360 in my 1970challenger has 485 horspower, and I love pulling it to the track with my ford!

dogdaysunrise 03-17-2004 12:00 AM

Just tell him that your 6 cyl is a big block, and his 360 is a small block. it doesnt mean much, but if its bragging your looking for then use it. thats about all the bragging rights its got.

the post 1992 360 magnum is a pathetic, weak, gas guzzling, cylinder head cracking boat anchor.

his 96 dodge is a overly front heavy truck with a weak motor and a bad transmission and small brakes.

Dodge stopped making real trucks in 92-93 (some 1-tons kept the old frame and body style into the 93 model year)

I really don't know anything about Dodge; but, it seems that my neighbor's big Dodge truck is always parked in the garage or driveway broke down.

I drive by almost everyday in my '86 150 with a 300 IL & 170 K miles.

I am not sure who has the best truck; but, I am glad my neighbor's wife has a good car for him to drive to the parts store.

.Find yourself a new friend who isn't a moron. Or, just ignore the one you've got.

It's all so junior high school-ish.

Stick with your 300. I used to work on dodges all day every day. Next time your friend blows a gasket, rmind him you still have your factory originals. And to say that the ram is front heavy, well so is the 4.9 F150. the 4.9 is fords heavyest block. thats because every thing is cast. (very good thing) And for bragging rights. I have raced many of rams, still have to lose to one yet. I'm still running stock. well except for a K&N air filter and ripped off my muffler.

Move over toyota boy, real men drive Fords!!!!
94 F150 4.9 inline six.
