It means the computer thinks that your OD is not working properly. You should also notice that the trans is shifting a bit harder, which it not good for the trans. I suggest pulling the codes to see what they indicate. Also, it may help to disconnect the battery for 5 minutes to clear the codes. If the light comes back on, you definitely have a problem.

If I am not mistaken the o/d light will blink in a pattern to let you know what is wrong.

I've had this problem twice on my 95 Explorer and the first time I took it to a shop and after $180.00 which included change of filter and new trani oil, mechanic did pull the codes but was unable to figure out what was wrong. So, he disconnected the battery for about 5 minutes and everything was back to normal. One good point from Dayle is that when this happens you trani starts shifting harder which can lead to more serious problems. About a week ago after almost 1 year it did it again. This time I went ahead and remove the battery cables for about 5 minutes and truck is working fine. I figure if it happens a third time, then I will for sure take it in again for a checkup. Hope this info. works. Good Luck!!!

I also have a '95. In the five years that I've owned it the O/D light has started flashing 3 or 4 times. Each time the light after resetting stays off for another 6 to 18 months. I'm not too worried about it since it doesn't come on back on immediately, indicating a more serious problem.

Thanks to you all and I will try the 5 minute battery disconnect.
