PCV Valve Replacement Mountaineer V8
 

After searching for two days I finally found the PCV valve on my 2000 Mountaineer 5.0. Problem is I can't figure out how to get to it. The dealer wants 150 to replace a 2.50 part. I have a bad, bad, feeling that I've got to remove a lot of hardware before I can get to the valve.

Can anyone give me a rundown of what I need to remove, and how to remove it? Or, is it gonna be worth the 150 to let someone else have the headache?

Where is the valve? On my 96, it's at the back of the intake manifold and very hard to get to. I had the dealer replace mine when I had some other things done and they didn't charge labor on it.
How many miles are on yours? Maybe it's still covered by the emissions warranty. Something to check into...

It has 106K on it and is out of warrenty. The valve is probably in the same location as yours, in the back and practically impossible to get to. I'm gonna have a little fella with small hands give it a try today, though I'm fairly sure it'll be a no-go.

By the way, is that a Studebaker you're using for a picture, there? Is that yours? My granddad had one similar to that and I always thought it was the coolest car on the planet.

Sorry I didn't get back to ya sooner. Nope, that's not my Studebaker. It looks a bit like my nephew's 1950, but, alas, not mine. I've got a 1957 Hawk which I've been working on for a long time now, and have a lot to go.

Regarding the PCV valve, I went ahead and bought me a code reader and it's the EGR valve which is triggering the Engine warning light. I found that one, it was right on top. I dread to find out how much that little part will cost.

The EGR valve is not as hard to get off on a 98 than the earlier 5.0 setups, but it is still not fun. Before I bought one, I would take yours off and clean it with carb cleaner, along with the EGR port on the intake. You can use carb cleaner and q-tips, and a Dremel if the carbon is built up too bad. Most of the time, this will do the job for another 40K miles. Just remember to reset your PCM when you do it, or if you decide to put on a new one, reset it also.

The PCV valve is a PITA. I have to climb up on my engine and bend and twist to get to mine. Its not as bad since I put the Eaton on, but with a stock upper intake, you do need a set of small arms... :D

Had all injectors, spark plugs, wires changed today....they throw in the PCV valve since in was in the neighborhood while the head was removed!!
