Airbag switch -- legal to install myself?

Hi, all -

I'm looking at an aftermarket airbag deactivation switch that appears to be quite simple to install. My question is whether I'm permitted to do this install myself. The phone-answerer at NHTSA said no, the switch manufacturer says yes, and I'm wondering who is right. Anyone know the ins and outs of this?

Airbag switch -- legal to install myself?

everyone i have talked to says you can put in your switch and still be within the law. the only thing is airbags are very tricky. i would take a few days to do it. first unhook the battery then i would let it sit over night because the air bag system stores energy. i have seen them go off as much as 3 days after the battery was taken out. after that follow the instructions supplied with the kit. if i were you i would keep my head out of the way of the air bag just in case. belive me if you ever have one go off close to your head you remeber it. ask me how i know that lol. also i would do this alone wiht out other people around the truck just in case. hope this is a help to you
