What's The Best Oil For My 6.0 SD

Well here I am on my first forum and I hope and pray that I have good news to share with you guys in the future about our new F-250 SRW crew 4x4 FX-4 (built 5-14-03). It's to early to say much about my truck other than "A LOT HEADS TURN" and I just get excited as I drive it around town. We picked out the T-RED with the beige bottom in the Lariat trim loaded.
So all I need to know is what most folks would us as oil for the do it yourself type of guy.
I did prayed that I would have a trouble free engine and look forward to having "That " prayer answered. 300 miles and counting!:)

I have used Shell Rotella 15W-40 in my '97 7.3 PS since new and have never had a wrench on it. On our new '03 X 6.0 PS I am using Pennzoil's 15w-40 for diesel engines, so far, so good!:-X04
Oh, by the way, we picked our '03 X 6.0 PS on June 6th and today have 9500 miles on it. No problems....GREAT engine:-X22

I'm using Mobil Delvac 1300 Super. Be sure you get an oil that meets the API requirements specified in your owners manual. I have read on this forum that incorrect oil specification has been the suspected cause of some cases of rough idle due to foaming. I buy my oil filter from NAPA. That filter design on top is the coolest thing. No mess at all.

Have you pulled off the air filter and looked at it yet? That's gotta be expensive to replace.

The Birmingham Ford dealer that I called the other day said " Don't kill the mesenger" when he told me the A-filter was $101.00 and the oil filter was $29.00 and the fuel filter was $88.00. But with one phone call I was told from my friend who works the counter at a wholesaler in town that his prices were half of that quoted.
Thank God for wholesalers!!!!!!!!!

Great to hear your 02 is doing fine.

I used Shell Rotella-T 15W40 in my '01 PSD and never had any problems. Most of my friends w/PSDs used the same. Good luck with your new one!

Delvac 1300 Super isn't synthetic. I used Mobil-1 in my other gasoline trucks and believe it was the best on the market. Mobil-1 doesn't meet the API spec. for the 6.0.

The Delvac is available in 5-gallon and 55-gallon containers. I called the local Exxon-Mobil distributor and got some prices. I was amazed to find it was cheaper at NAPA in one-gallon jugs than the 5-gallon pails, and I'd really rather the 1-gallons jugs because they are easier to handle and dispose of.

Shell Rotella-T is highly recommended too and I probably would have used it except my parts store was out of it when I needed to do my first change. I'll stick with the Mobil since that's what I started with. I don't think I'd consider any other oil than these two, but I do know Royal Purple (spelling?) makes a synthetic that meets the API specification. It expensive though.

NAPA sells the Mobil Delvac 1300 Super for 6.49/gallon and the filter for 22.99. Be sure you've got a drain pan big enough for all that oil!

About the fuel filter; there are two of them. One on top of the engine and another mounted on the frame beneath the driver. The scheduled maint. calls for both of them to be replaced every 15K miles. I need to pick up a pair and keep them in my truck... something every wise diesel owner should do.

I found this oil on a site http://www.avlube.com/
Mobil Delvac 1 full synthetic 5W-40 diesel engine oil. Shipped in a case 4 one gallon containers. Simply the finest diesel engine oil, providing a full 40 weight oil thickness protection and a super additive package capable of providing oil change intervals of up to 100,000 miles for over the road trucks! Delvac 1 flows to 65 degrees BELOW zero, enabling instantaneous cold weather starting and oil flow yet does not thin out with high temperatures. You will be amazed with the instantaneous starting with Delvac 1 and its overall performance!

HI GUY'S I RECEIVED MY "OIL BIBLE" IN THE MAIL THE OTHER DAY AND THIS GUY SWEARS BY SYNTHETIC OIL (15W-40) "AMSOIL" TO BE MORE SPECIFIC. HE CLAIMS 12,500 MILES BETWEEN OIL CHANGES. HE CAUTIONS TO PUT AT LEAST 10,000 MILES ON THE ENGINE BEFORE USING SYNTHETIC OILS THOUGH. (BREAKIN). HE ALSO RECOMMENDS CHANGING THE OIL FILTER AT 6000 MILES. HE CLAIMS YOU CAN GET 200 TO 300,000 MILES OUT OF ONE OF THESE NEW ENGINES. HE ALSO SUGGESTS A HASTINGS OIL FILTER OR AN AMSOIL FILTER. JUST A THOUGHT, HOPE THIS HELPS. JACK

Two more cents for ya. I have used Mobil Delvac, Shell Rotella T,
Chevron Delo in many diesels over the years, 5.9 Cummins, 6.2/6.5 Chevrolets, and 6.9/7.3 Internationals, and seen many go high mileage (250k plus). I have two friends at Fairview Ford in San Bernardino, Ca; one a 20 year diesel service/heavy repair tech; the other a 25 year wholesale/heavy duty truck parts man, who say the 6.0 is the first International Harverster diesel that has had a problem with oil aeration (foaming) as Debug suggested. They both told me (longtime friends who don't need to sell me oil!) that the factory Ford powerstrokediesel and Chevron Delo 400 are the only oils, to their knowledge, with the proper anti-aeration additive. I run synthetic in some of my other vehicles, if Navistar said it was best, I would definitely run it in my 6.0 too!!

have a great day!!

Tim

HI SOCAL, GOOD ADVICE ALSO. I GENERALLY TRADE CARS AT 50,000 MILES SO USING SYNTHETIC IS QUITE EXPENSIVE FOR THE AVERAGE GUY I SUPPOSE BUT IF YOU ARE ONE THAT KEEPS THEM ALONG TIME I STILL THINK SYNTHETIC IS THE WAY TO GO. I CHANGE MINE ACCORDING TO THE MANUAL AND AM USING DELO IN IT NOW AND WILL PROBABLY STAY WITH IT BECUASE LIKE I SAID, I TRADE UP QUITE OFTEN. THANKS FOR YOUR GOOD ADVICE. JACK

Thanks for the info. I checked today with my local wholesaler who sales Delo and he has it for $287.00 for 55 gal. drums. The foaming seems to be the real concern and it also has synthetic characteristics as Chevron describes. I would love to know what Ford puts in the 6L at the factory. I know they have a part #, but who produces it for them. As of now it looks like that Delo is in the lead.
My wholesaler has the O-filter for 21.95/the A-filter for 50.00/and the fuel filters for 44.00 ea.
May get the # for your w-saler and see if ships. Who knows it may be cheaper if I purchase several items.
