So, had a bad day a couple of months ago

I was up in North Carolina for a contract and had to come back to Jax for a VA apt. Drove back with no problems, took a nap, got up and headed to Southside for the appt. I was coming up on the Baymeadows exit when "CRACK!KNKNKNKNKNKNKNK!!!" I took the exit and made it to the Gates gas sta, jumped and popped the hood to look at the exhaust manifolds(I knew one was cracking, I thought it had broken) and noticed a growing puddle of oil underneath the engine. I hollered at my wife to shut the engine down and looked under and saw a hole in the oil pan! :-hair After we got towed back to the house, it had cooled down for me to stick my finger in the hole and felt lots of chunks, including a rod bolt still attached to part of a rod, and the oil pump driveshaft. Got online and found a 360 in Crystal River, FL for $250 on CL. Got up Sat morning to go get it, got there and recognized the blue F100 4x4 from here on the forum in the Bump side. (I do not remember his avatar name, unfortunately, but I am pleased with my engine) Had to go back to NC to work for another month, but I finally got back down here to put the engine in to my truck at the NAS Jax Auto Skills Center

So the plan had been to pull a main and a rod cap to check it out before I dropped it in but WOW was it clean, so I just pulled the dead 390, dressed the 360 and put it back together

#5 rod came apart and whipped the pan rail and oil pump boss right out of the block

That looks viscious, Good thing a Fte'r had what you needed. Had the same experience with a 75 Dart sport with a 225, replaced it with a 340 4 speed from a 69 Dart gtx. 3 weeks later I blew the rear end out at Gimli raceway, twas the start of an expensive summer. Got lots of qualifying runs in, made it past the 60' line in competition twice in 9 tries.:(

So, an observation or two on the dead 390
1 I had assumed that my truck has 264000+miles, not the PO stated 164000, based on the rust on the body, tightness of the front suspension with the radius arm brackets bolted rather than riveted on, bad Ujoints, and other things ie a work truck that was well taken care of until it was parked.
2 The truck was sold in WA, spent time in CA (CARB Engine swap sticker on the door jamb to a 360), then ended up in Lake City, FL working on a ranch
3 The engine had been swapped back to a 390 before I had gotten it, but I figured that since the timing cover and intake manifold both showed signs of silver paint, someone had already been in it and had rebuilt it

Nope, it still had the nylon toothed timing gear, 410 marked pistons, shim gasket and Ford marked bearings and no ridge on the cylinder walls, I polished off the carbon with a Scotchbride and it was almost smooth

If I would have known it was still untouched, I would have looked for another eng and put a simple rebuild on that to run with, and rebuilt the one in it with all the glory parts

Ouch, my sympathies

Yer only 16 once, probably why I haven't aged a day in the 37 years since Lol. Actually, now you can rebuild that motor at your own leisure, they're usually cheaper that way and last longer. Outside of machining, cam and internals every thing else can be bought used.

On the 2nd pic of the third post, that lump to the right of the oil pump, is the top of the oil pump still bolted to the boss that is supposed to be part of the block, I can just imagine how much that would cost to repair cast iron like that

Took a 2nd look at the pick and yes I must agree, that would be a hard part to weld back into the block. I've done to much salvaging/repairing in my days and sometimes I need some time to realize " I aint doing this with my skills, scrap bin! ". If I don't have a reasonable chance of fixing it myself I don't send it to my brother unless it's a must have situation.

Are you sure you didn,t drive that thing in to a lake and hydraulic it. My god that is some carnage.

Not only did it run for about a mile before I came to a stop and shut it down, it actually started up and ran enough to back it up the driveway about 6ft a month later.
