94 diesel trans stoped shifting

I got the truck last night and drove it 177 miles home. Its low on power and I can't hear the turbo at all and its straight pipe. Also the trans was shifting hard from 1 to 2. now it won't shift at all. I can manually shift 1 2 then go to D and it goes back into 1st. I think it's a little over filled. What should Ido? Would changing the fluid possibly fix this?

I also have my od light blinking and just read about people saying it was a fuse. But their not having troubles with 1-2 but ima give it a look tonight. Any other ideas?

Check for codes

Mark Kovalsky 12-05-2014 08:42 AM

It probably isn't a fuse. The blinking light is telling you that codes are stored that will help determine what's wrong. Without the codes all you can do is guess.

I'm pretty sure the truck is obd 1 and I don't have a scanner for obd 1. I read about checking them with a meter but I didn't fully understand it.

Does a shop usually charge just to read them and if so about how much?

Your trans is doing exactly what the computer is telling it to do when there is a major sensor or control solenoid problem so you need to pull the codes.
Common causes of this behaviour are wiring problems with the MLPS or VSS sensor or a bad TPS.

You don't need a code reader to pull codes on this truck either, just find the EEC test connector near the drivers side hood hinge and put a jumper wire(paper clip) between the STI and SIG_Rtn pins, turn the key to run and count the flashes on the check engine light. If you want a more fool proof method buy an Equus 3145 code reader.. they're only about $20. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Equus-Products-3145-Digital-Ford-Code-Reader-1982-1995-/231262132964?pt=US_Measuring_Layout_Tools&hash=item35d84c1ae4

your '94 diesel could have one of 3 engine choices.
1.DI power stroke
2.IDI n/a
3.IDI turbocharged

what is the 8th digit in your vin,so that we know what your truck is?

firstly,in 1993 ford offered the optional turbocharged idi diesel.some think in '93 the turbo was standard.it wasn't.the same applies to the '94 turbo idi.

so in 1993 there were two engine options.
1.the N/A idi and there were greatly many more in '93 and '94 than turbocharged.
the 8th digit in the vin = M.

2.the optional turbocharged idi.very low % compared to the n/a's.
the 8th digit in the vin = C or K.

(both my '93's came from ford as n/a - M codes.)

in 1994 it got a bit confusing, but nothing crazy.there were 3 engine options.

1.the N/A idi and there were greatly many more in '93 and '94 than turbocharged.
the 8th digit in the vin = M.

2.the optional turbocharged idi.very low % compared to the n/a's.
the 8th digit in the vin = C or K.

3.the new directly injected and computer controlled yet still same exact cubic inches (or liters) that of 444ci or 7.3l but a whole new platform.ford called it the "power stroke" for advertizing sake.these, like all diesels offered since, all received turbo's.it was over and done.the struggle to turn enough people on to expensive turbocharged diesel engines was no longer anything hard to bring to market.the idi had paved the way, with enough learning that the extra expense of running a turbocharged diesel was worth the increased price tag.
the 8th digit in the vin for the '94 power stroke was always = F.

What's the mlps and vss and those others you mentioned. Its not a power stroke its just a idi turbo. I'mgoing to change the trans fluid and filter today. Should u buy new solonoids to? When Ido the self check what will iI be looking for? Like a blinking light code or? Thanks for all the help.

94f2507.3 12-05-2014 04:41 PM

I looked in the under hood fuse box and found that the fuses 4, 6 and seven were blown.

94f2507.3 12-06-2014 07:10 PM

Changed the fulid and filter today. Nothing changed.. Any thoughts? I checked all the wiring and found nothing. I don'thave any check engine lights on.

Mark Kovalsky 12-06-2014 07:46 PM

Yes, I have thoughts. I've already given you my best advice and from the lack of response I can see that you were not interested.

No, but you have the OD light flashing. Same thing, except it's telling you there's a problem with the transmission instead of the engine.

post #7 is what you need to learn now.don't worry it's simple.post up the codes when you get 'em.
remember, key on,engine off and hold wide open throttle during the scan so you don't get false code 23.

Well my od light stopped blinking. But the problem is still there. I'll try and read the codes to marrow. I read this and it seemed like maybe this could be my problem. "and the second was a bad solenoid block connector (burned wires from 180,000 miles next to the exhaust pipe, plus lock tabs broken off allowing water to enter solenoid pin block, shorting out solenoid pins so that I only had 1rst gear)." So after reading this I checked my transmission harness and two wires rubbed to bear wire on the steering column boot. So maybe this is part of my issue. So i cut the section out and put a new wire in. I wasn't able to go drive the truck (trucks loud and my neighbors come outside and yell at me when I start it up late at night)
