Help Installing Wooden Bed - 1950 F1
 

After cutting down the wooden slats for the truck bed I've come to see that the installation of the wood is interfering with hump in the frame at the rear wheel. Am I correct that the wood installs directly to the frame as you see in my photos, or does the wooden bed need to be raised above these humps?

Does anyone have experience in installing a wooden bed in a 1950 F1?

Does the wood attach directly to the frame?

Is there a riser kit that raises the wood higher off the frame?

Thanks for your help. The project has come to a stop until I can figure this out.

Welcome to the forum. Which bed are you using on your '50? The early or late style? Either way, you should have either a framework that the bed is assembled to, in the case of the early style, or crossmembers across the framerails that the wood and bedsides attach to with the later style bed.

This would be the later style. You can see in my photos the wood is sitting directly on the crossmembers, however by doing so, the wood falls flush with the framerails, but not entirely flush due to the rear wheel hump.

Should the wood be sitting on directly on the crossmember or higher to be raised over the hump?

I looked at your pics. Notice your cross members compared to the truck you posted in your link. Mine are like his in the pics...yours are upside down compared to mine and his. When I put my wood bed in there are cross pieces that fit down into those cross members and then the wood sits on that. Mine and his may be the ones that are upside down for all I know. But I had no problem making it work that way. I have no pics of the wood risers in the cross members but you can see how they would sit down in mine compared to yours that have no "U" facing up....yours faces down.????

Thanks! I ordered "clear" pine from Lowe's because I like the lighter look. All I put on it is many many coats of marine spar varnish.

Welcome Aboard! Keep asking questions - someone here should be able to help out. Here are some pics from our '50 bed "reconstruction". We had to replace most of the support structure for the bed so it's not exactly stock.
Hopefully this helps some.

Thanks was there a store parts # on the wood, I think Im going that route with mine also......

I haven't put the wood in my bed yet, but it looks like Chucks kit would be the best way to get around the kick up on the bed frame. The early and late 50 bed must be a lot different.

So from what I see there is quite the differences between years in how this is done. I find this restoration to be the closest to my problem, as the frame matches what I have exactly.

As you see from this photo the largest arrow points to the same hump in the frame which I am trying to work around. The wooden piece he has sitting on this frame sits cleanly across the back of the box, but would need to be cut around this hump as the bed is installed.

Here in his finished bed, you see no cut outs around this hump, which leads me to believe that the bed is sitting on perhaps wooden strips. Therefore the strips are bolted to the frame and the bedwood is bolted to the strips.

What are people's thoughts on this interpretation?
