Getting close to time to replace the scorpions

I have a 2013 king ranch with the p 275 55r 20 pirellis as stock tires almost 24k miles on them and it's time to start looking for replacement options. They've been as good as I would expect from stock tires. want to upgrade to an LT rated tire since I tow/haul a lot for work. My last two trucks were hand me downs from my dad when he upgraded to a new one. He always replaced the stock tires with Michelin ltx m/s and m/s2 tires once the stock tires wore out. When I replaced the ltx's on my last truck before I sold it, I got a set of Toyo open country at2's because my company paid for them. I only had the truck for about a month after that before I traded it in so I didn't get much of a chance to form an opinion on the toyos. So when it comes to tires I don't have much experience outside of the ltx's and the pirellis that came stock on my king ranch What tires have you guys replaced your stock tires with and what do you think of them ?

I've had really good luck with Cooper discoverer ATP and Hankook Dynapro ATM. Both from Discount Tire.

I just replaced my scorpion str's on Friday. I went with Cooper tires HTP's from discount tire. They are a street tire that fits my needs and have a 65k mile warranty. I haven't had them long but I am happy with my decision. I believe that they are a harder tire than the scorpions as I can feel the road a bit more but it's not a drastic difference. Road noise is about the same. Michelins would have cost me over $1000 and I got these for $730. Hope this helps

LTX MS2

The Michelin LTX MS2 where always my go to tire for the F150. This time I decided to try a tire that would be better in the dirt and mud. I purchased the good year wrangler adventure with Kevlar. They come both LT and P rated. I picked P because I rarely tow over 7,000lbs.

I have about 2000 mules on them so far and am happy. They are quite, get good traction in the rain and on dirt roads. They do a great job towing the boat. I can't wait to try them with the car hauler trailer and my car.

I believe that "Wrangle adventure with kevlar" is the replacement for the old silentarmor tires. I loved the silentarmor, very good pavement manners, and surprisingly good in snow and ice conditions. They would be my go-to choice next time I'm buying rubber.

No thought of going back to Scorpion?

Anyone use the scorpion in snow? Read one comment here and they weren't liked.

Fat Ford Boy 08-18-2014 10:22 PM

I'm running COOPER AT3's. I like them !!

I had them on my 2011 (stock Tires) and this year we had a very rare week of light snow and Ice, they weren't really designed for that. Not sure if it was the exact same tire though, mine were Pirelli Scorpion "P-Zeros", more of a speed rated tire, my company truck has cheap Firestone Destination LE's on it and they were better in the Ice that the pirellis, but we are talking a lot less powerful truck (company truck is a 2008 SCab with the 4.6l) too. I've heard real good things about the Michelin tires and BFG's......but I would think any M/T tire wouldn't be as good in the wet and ice as say a A/T.

We had the Scorpions on our 2008 Edge AWD. I don't remember which model tire they were, STR maybe. The snow traction was ok, when the roads were cold (temp in the low teens) the traction was poor and they wore out fast. We went through 2 sets by 60,000 miles.

RigTrash601 08-19-2014 07:36 PM

They must have been the higher speed rated version, softer, mine had 21K on them when I traded the truck, but would be needing replacement soon. They were really soft, if the truck sat for an extended period of time, the flat spots would be pretty bad, they all do it to a certain extent, these were pretty bad for several miles though after sitting.

I live in Michigan and do not care for Winter driving with the Pirelli Scorpion tires that came on my 2010 FX4. I plan to switch to a better snow tire this winter. Jim

Actually, they're M/S tires, not M/T. It means snow and mud. If you look
at their tread, compared to an A/T tire, you'll see a lot more siping, which means better snow capability.

I've had Michelin LTX A/T tires and M/S tires here in the snowy mountains
of Utah, and can say the M/S tires are a noticeable improvement.

RigTrash601 08-31-2014 07:18 PM

Yeah, M / S tires don't fly off the shelf down here! (No need in them really) We have the "once every few year" Ice storm, but... Folks with a wrecker service mops up when that happens, regardless of the tire! Down here you need tires that will channel water really well.

Truckpilot1329 08-31-2014 07:24 PM

I was in Memphis for years. Those ice storms were worse then any
snow storm. It didn't matter what tires you had on your truck.
You weren't going anywhere, at least in a straight line.

Semper Fi

RigTrash601 08-31-2014 07:27 PM

Semper Fi!

Also, there ain't a redneck in Mississippi that can drive on ice!:-X04 I know, I happen to be one of 'em!

Ice and ...."hold my beer and watch this"....don't go together!

xr7gt390 08-31-2014 07:57 PM

M+S can be misleading

I lived in Southern Indiana for a while. The ice storms were insane, about the only place you could drive was into a ditch. That was after spending an hour chiseling the ice off you windshield.

Here is a link to Tire Rack's definition of M+S tires.

We had the worst ice storms i've ever dealt with last year, did not cause that much of an issue though since our winter roads are ice/snow packed anyhow. with dedicated snow tires (studdless and studded) i had no issues..then again we don't shut anything down for a little ice or a little snow...its just another day.

I'm going to be replacing my horrible stock pirellis with Coopers.

Thinking of tracks for my f350 or worse case a smart car with tracks. .
