Dana 44 seal leak question

My front diff axle seal(s) are leaking.
I have never been into a diff before so I thought I should ask before
I jump in.
In order to replace the axle seals, do I need to remove the gearing
to replace the seals? It looks like I don't, but it also looks like it might be easier if I did.

The repair looks simple enough besides ripping the front end apart for an 8 dollar part.
Any kits I should avoid or buy? Tips/tricks/pitfalls I should look out for?

Let me ask this stupid question. If the front diff goes dry and I don't use/engage the 4wd will I burn anything up? My understanding of the 4wd is I won't.
I don't want to put the truck into the garage yet as I have other projects going on.
Yet I still need to drive it at times..

As long as your hubs unlock and your transfer case goes into 2 wheel drive, nothing in the front should spin, so you wont burn anything up:-X06

Thanks David, I thought as much. Easier to ask now than learn later.

as David said, you will be safe as long as everything is unlocked.
but for piece of mind, i would pull the plug and put a quart of gear oil in the diff anyway.

and to answer your question on replacing the seals, i always remove the carrier. it just makes things easier, and you get the added benefit of being able to thoroughly inspect everything while it is apart. .
