Intermiten stalling
I have a 1988 F250 7.5l 460 V8. While driving down the road I have a intermittent stalling problem. Acts like you turned the key off. Most times starts running before I can pull off the road. Some times while stalled it jerks on and off before running again. I have replaced plugs, wires, cap and rotor, cleaned most battery and electrical connections. Debating on replacing TFI distributor module or computer. Any ideas what is going on would be appreciated. Thanks for your help.

Welcome to FTE!
Very common problem that can be traced to two most likely root causes. The first is the Ignition Control Module (ICM) bolted to the side of the distributor. Some will refer to it as the TFI. It can be removed then tested at any good parts store. If you go this route make sure they test it multiple times. The second most common cause is the PIP sensor inside the distributor. For reference: PIP aka Stator The PIP can be replaced but it does take some special tools. Many choose to replace the entire distributor. But be aware many "rebuilt" distributors have bad stators (aka PIP) in them because they are usually never tested. |
Thanks for the help. My next step was to replace the ICM. Had a problem with one on my Ford Ranger that would cut out intermittently when hot, usually in the middle of the Nevada desert. This truck started this problem in the winter. Been working on my Fords for over thirty years and they still stump me sometimes.

Update.
Thanks again for the help. I found a crack in the PIP sensor. I also replaced the ICM to be safe. Stalling problem has stopped. Yea :).
Now trying to figure out bad gas mileage. 6 mpg. or less. I was getting 10. Done normal tune up and CO sensor. Still runs a little rough. Randy |
