2.3 timing belt change.

Hi Everyone ,

I am new to this Forum .It looks like a good one to me !I was driving down the road at 65 miles per and my timing belt broke(120,000 miles) on original belt. Is that about how long those belts usually last ? Also, How hard is it to change this belt .Any advice would be appreciated. It dont look that hard to get at so I was going to take a stab at it tonight. Thanks in advance for any help. This is my 1992 ranger 2wd.

No, they don't normally last 120K miles, you should have changed it at 60K miles, fortunately for you, it's a non interference
motor, so just line her up, and put the new belt on...

My father-in-law's belt broke at 143K miles, I have 132K on mine and I bet it's the original one :)

They are both 94's BTW.....

Mines a 93. The tensioner was fine...a metal pulley and the bearing was fine. I looked at getting one from Advance Auto- cheap plastic.

Oddly enough my alternator just went too....a week later (also orig. equip.)

Some say 60k, others, 100k. Me, I'll let it go till 100k, and worry about it then. Not like you're gonna blow it up if she lets go. You'll just have to walk home.:-X04

Well, mine's been timing for almost 19 years, guess I'd better change it. Figure it will be dry-rotted..
And, I don't want to walk home or pay some repair place a zillion to fix it when I don't get to choose when, where, and who does it. But, I figure I have gotten my use out of it.. tom

Could someone please explain or point me to a URL that explains the details of changing this timing belt? I've got a 1997 with a 2.3L 4cyl that's got about 125000 miles. I don't want to be stranded beside the road.

timing belt 2.3

I have a manuel on the 1979-1990 2.3,so if anyone needs referance to the timing belt change please email me at jasper002002(No Email Addresses In Posts!).I will scan the pages and send them to you via email, the book is pretty good about explaining that dept. The good thing is that like someone mentioned earlier,it is a non interference motor so you dont have to worry about getting the timing wrong and bending valves.Good luck and happy to help out in any way i can guys!:D
