Power Steering Conversion

I have a 1960 F100 with a 292 4 speed. I'm looking at doing the Toyota steering gear with the saginaw pump conversion. Is there anyone out there that has done this conversion that I can speak on the phone. Before I order parts I'd like see what I should and shouldn't buy.

Thanks,
Bill

Let me start by saying I haven't completed this swap, but I started down the path. I'm in NJ and early 80's Toyota 4x4s were driven into the ground around here. I called a few yards and they all said they'd have to find one if I wanted to pay for it up front.

The hard part is the pitman arm. I was going to purchase one as I'm not a certified welder and you and your passengers life depend on this piece. CPP carries a toyota to ford arm for around $60. In fact I spoke with them about the swap and they were very helpful. After a few days I went back to their site and just a little further down the page, I saw they sell a whole kit. It's not cheap at just over $500, but it's everything but the power steering pump. They have that too if you need it. At that price I'm likely to just purchase the kit and know it's a good steering box with the correct hardware.

Either way... they have the pieces you need. Classic Ford Truck Parts-1948-1964 Parts. The Finest in Suspension, Brakes, Steering and Accessories.

I've found several sites that have the parts - however - a few lingering questions.

Saw one site that said the saginaw pump won't work with the standard exhaust. I assume they are talking about the cross over pipe at the front of the engine.

So if I change the exhaust say to a set of Patriot headers - will the toyota power steering gear fit.

Anyone have a conversion completed that can give me some input?

I did the cpp box on a 1960 with a 223. I don't recommend the Toyota box.

damifiknow - just read your other post about the Toyota box. I have a 292 in mine. Any chance you can post a picture of the steering box so I can see how it sits with the clutch linkage. I don't want to order anything until I have a pretty good idea what is going to work.

Thx,
Bill

Thank you very much for the pics. I'll have to call CPP and talk with them.

I couldn't get Toyota box to line up with stock column. Maybe I had wrong bracket but the hook up for column came out right under the brake pedal.
