Truck stalls while driving
Just a little background, 2002 F-250 with the 7.3 284,000 miles. I just bought it. Doesn't seem like the PO did much other than changing oil, filters, etc. Anyway the last 2 days as I'm driving the truck will do a quick misfire like action and then it dies. I have had it do the misfire without it dying about three times, but twice it has died immediately. It won't start back up right away, but if I come back to it later, it fires right up. Changed the CPS yesterday after the first bout, and still had the problem today. After reading through several posts, I'm thinking maybe IPR, maybe even the seals on the IPR? Or maybe the fuel screen in the tank? What do you guys think? Thanks.

Those symptoms are pretty much exactly what a CPS dying will cause. Did you use an aftermarket or OEM sensor when you replaced it?
|
Aftermarket (hangs head in shame).
|
The after market sensors have a reputation for being susceptible to RFI (radio frequency interference). Probably the best thing to do would be to pick one up at the nearest dealership and see if it cures the problem before spending time and money on other things.
|
Is there a way to test the CPS and see if that's it?
|
No, not really. Sometimes it will set a soft code, but not all the time. The new sensor should only be about $30 from a dealer. Keep the aftermarket one in your glove box for an emergency spare.

Any other guesses?

Thanks for the insight Pikachu

Use only an OME sensor. Riffraff has them for sale |

Havent been able to get one from the dealer yet.

Oh. Well, in the meantime you could make sure the tin nut that holds the spacer and solenoid on the IPR is tight. If it's loose, it can affect the way the truck runs.
|
Ill look into that too. Where is the spacer on the IPR? I assume the tin nut is obvious if I look at the IPR. Thanks.
|
The spacer is directly behind the solenoid, between the solenoid and the nut. It actually looks like it's part of the solenoid at first glance.

Thanks again. I've been having an oil leak, that I was trying to trace down too. Do you think it's possible the leak is coming from the IPR and that was causing my stalling problem? Or is it not likely to leak from the IPR?
