Good read. The "Nailhead" had what I like in an engine, torque. For me, I will always take torque over HP. I don't care if my engine will wind to 6k with no problem. I want it to pull. That is the opposite of my wife's 3.5 in her Edge and the 3.6 in my Ram. Both will rev high and run very well, but not much low end torque.

Loved it in OTR trucking. I could take a high torque, lower HP engine, and pass the big engine trucks up most any hill or mountain. 500 HP doesn't mean much if you're only putting out 1450 ft lbs of torque. I'll take 400 HP and 1650 ft lbs of torque any day.

my "tuned up" 237 mack with "low hole" twin stick trans would keep up to 427 and 454 macks with 8 and 13 speed transmissions. only time they would pull away from me was on long grades because i did not have the gears to keep in the power band.

Twisting the screws were you? lol
Some guys would take a ball peen hammer to the back pump plate and knock the shaft forward to get unlimited RPM and fuel. They got caught because the front and side of the white trailers turned black.

I drove a 237 for a while, then got a less than a year old 1976 Cruiseliner with the 300 air to air aftercooler. I loved to hear that second turbine start ramping up after the main turbo spooled up.

It had a good bit more power than the 237. From NC to Detroit I had to downshift twice in the 237, but only once in the 300, and that was going up Black Mountain in NC. The 237 was Black Mountain in NC, and Jellico Mountain in Tn.

actually, i blew an injector line to cylinder #3 100 miles from the yard. road mechanic was on the job and brazed the line ot get it home. while at the shop replacing the line, we noticed the turbo was pushing some oil. but since we bib not have a spare turbo put it back together. fired it up to test, and lost cylinder #6. called the local diesel injector service we used, but they did not have 237 injectors. just 285 injectors. and no 237 4 inch turbo either. so i put 285 injectors and a 5 inch 385/300 turbo on it. then turned up fuel to match injectors and turbo. the dynatard rod in the injector pump kept on bending, so i wired a two speed rear switch to the injector pump, grounding the switch to the clamp on the shifter. i could shift that thing just as fast as i could snap gears.
it really woke that engine up.

I wonder how much old stuff he still has.
Looks like the Toy and Auto Museum had a big sale in early March.

Too far gone for me . Maybe you could.

I think it was used for stream stabilization.
