Header Coating
 

I have a set of Sanderson ceramic coated block hugger headers on my 54 with a 302 that needs to be recoated. Who have you guys used ?

There are many local shops here in SoCal that apply the coating...you may want to check you local shops to see if they can help you. Most of the powder coating shops around here do JetHot and other ceramic coatings now.

Thanks Charlie, I'm near Cincinnati Oh, one would think there would be some place in Cincy that provides ceramic coating but all I'm finding local is powder coating. Looking for someone that has had experience with a vendor that will do a good job. I found several doing a Internet search but as we all now that can be a crap shot.

Small world, I grew up in Cincy...NCH to be exact. My buddy and his sons run a body and restoration shop in Batesville Stoinoff's Auto Restorations - Home you could contact them and see if they have a vendor who could help.

Charlie .. I know the body shop your talking about. I'm only 15 minutes from Batesville. If I don't find someone to do the coating I may call them. I have a lead on a place near Dayton but haven't called yet.

You're saying "recoated". What is on them now and what is wrong with the current coating?

They are ceramic coated and have what I'll call rust pimples or spots on them.

So I'm assuming these are polished ceramic. Not sure how old they are but I would bet that they are not very bright any longer.

As a general rule, bright coated "shorty headers" don't hold up very well unless the engine is in PERFECT tune and they are in an open air / street rod application. You're better off with a high temp ceramic, but unfortunately this does not include the polished finish.

The reason they fail is because the headers are so short that they are not much longer than the flame front. Even in perfect tune they get overheated, dull and the pores open up causing the little rust spots you are seeing.. On full length headers you'll generally find that the first 8-12 inches of primary dull as well but they are longer and dissipate the heat better.

I had my Sanderson headers done at a local company (Luftkraft Fabrication). They used Hi- temperature Chromex.

CCPcoatings... Thats what I'm dealing with but not that much rust. The headers have been on the truck probably 12 years.

How much $$ did they charge to recoated if you don't mind me asking.

$275 and I think they do out-of State but the shipping will cost.

I used a company called TOEFCO in Niles, MI. Not far from Benton Harbor. It was 12-13 years ago, so I can not remember what it cost. I had silver ceramic coating put on headers from a 92 T-Bird that fit nicely with my 351W/C6 on my 56 F100. Photos in my gallery show LH and RH shorty headers.
