Unibody cab/bed strength
I want to do a frame-off on my 63 unibody shortbed. Is the cab/bed assembly strong enough to be bolted to a rotisserie without any problems? I'm not sure I'll use a rotisserie-but; it'll need to be at least strong enough to be moved and man-handled while it is off the frame. I've never even been around a unibody before-let alone work on one. They're exceedingly rare out here in farm country. The farmers stayed away from them; as they used their pickups just like their 2-ton trucks-hauling lots of big loads.
Anyway, if anybody out there has seen a unibody mounted on a rotisserie; I'd love to hear how it worked. Thanks, Brett |
I had mine off and had some big casters that fit the holes for the front cab mounts and used a floorjack at the rear valance. It then sat on jackstands for awhile before I lost my shop and the truck went away. When I got rid of the body I filled it with 4,000lbs of scrap and dragged it onto a rollback tow truck and it didn't buckle.

That's awesome! I guess I can probably lift mine up off the frame without damaging it then. The casters/floor jack seems like a good idea. I may look into doing something similar. Thanks for the info and the idea. Brett

I put unis on wirly gig all the time. The rotis I use is capable of being pulled down the road at moderate road speeds and I have done that. Normally I put rtis on car trailer to haul any distance and that also works great. Body strength has never been a problem. Problem is to be sure connection points are well reinforced or strong locations already. I use tailgate holes on rear and hood hinge holes on front.
The rotis (Wirlygig) I use has a third pipe that will stiffen and help any time you might want to make major body alterations that decrease strength. |
