F-600 Questions

Hello All!
I'm currently looking at a 1993 F-600 4x4 that I might purchase, remove the flatbed that's currently on it and put on a dump bed. It has one of the Ford straight six diesels (there's a bunch of snow on the fiberglass hood and have been unable to roll it forward to identify the engine) and an Allison 4-speed automatic with a column shifter. What I'm wanting to know is if with this transmission, if the F-600 could haul a backhoe on a tandem axle, dual wheel trailer?
If more info is needed, I can certainly do some more digging, or in this case, snow removal.

THANKS!

:-X21

I use my 96 f800 with a 5 speed Allison, which should be that mine has a lower low gear.

nevrenufhp 01-12-2014 12:58 PM

A 93 could be the last of the 6.6/7.8 litre Fords, or a Cummins 5.9. Likely it is 210hp or less, being a 4X4. The allison could be an AT545, or MT643.
A VIN # would help, I'm sure.

Looks like I didn't finish a thought (wife says I do that a lot). I Tow with mine, 7500 lb trailer, and not uncommon to have equipment in the 20,000 lb range, so 27,500 lb and Im not sure what the truck weighs.

If your use to the pickup Allison, these are a lot different.

nevrenufhp, I finally got my 8.3 running good. Boost hose was worn through and the racor fuel filter was letting air in around the pump. Then I took the top off the p7100, its good now.

Great!
How do you like it now?

Its getting used to me :-X03 . I'm liking it, but its a different kind of power.

nevrenufhp 01-13-2014 10:46 PM

Now for some Marine 480 injectors, a #0 fuel plate, gov springs, a little timing advance, head studs, and an HT3B turbo under the original.

Fossilman Ford 01-14-2014 05:58 PM

SO! The snow has melted enough out west here and so I rolled back the hood on the truck and to my surprise (and ultimately, my dismay) it has the 160HP 359 CI Cummins (the 5.9L).

This now spurs another question... :-huh would it be worth the time and ultimately the money to dump in a 270HP Ford 474 CI Diesel (the 7.8L)?

Your thoughts much appreciated!!

by-the-way, the VIN is 1FDWK64C9RVA24045

thanks again

nevrenufhp 01-14-2014 06:41 PM

No way on the swap to a 474, keep the 5.9. Hop it up, just a little(free mods). With 250hp, it'll do really well. I'd say, up to about 40k pounds. Now, the trans is probably going to be the turd of an AT545, and 250hp is the max you want to send thru it.

Fossilman Ford 01-21-2014 09:21 AM

I realized after I posted my last comment that I wasn't thinking at all. First, the 474 and its little brother are good engines but very hard to find parts for it. When it comes to modifying & tweeking the engine's performance the Fords are a bit of a lemon. Where as the 359 Cummins has all sorts of performance parts available and it's still being produced.

Sorry! I didn't know what I was saying. I would keep the Cummins and build it up.

Thanks for the help. :-whud

Welcome to FTE

1FD = FoMoCo USA - Ford Truck (Incomplete Vehicle).

W = GVWR Class 6: 19,501-26,000 lbs.

K64 = F600 Diesel.

C (1993/99) = 5.9L (359 cid) Cummins model FD-1060 I-6 diesel.

9 = Check digit, FoMoCo use only.

R = 1994.

V = Kentucky Truck Assembly Plant.

A24045 = 1994 Numerical Sequence of Assembly.

R = 1994.

The door column tag said the truck was built in October of 1993 which I guess is technically Model Year 1994, hence VIN code "R" = 1994

Production Date: 10/93 = 1994.

Since new vehicles are introduced in September of the previous year, production begins in August.

Did the "heavier" F-Series (F-600 & up) have the option for the 8.3L Cummins?

I just purchased a 1992 F600 Crew Cab with the 6.6 and automatic Allison Transmission. I want to make a pick up out of it so I need to shorten the wheelbase and get the back drive shaft cut down. Has anyone done this before and could offer some advice?

The VIN is 1FDNK62P2NVA21354 if anyone has a decoder it would be nice to see what it originally came with versus what is there now. I will post more pics as we go, we just picked up a 1992 dually bed so now it is time to get the frame and drive shaft attended to.

It's done all the time.

If the frame rails are straight and the same size front to back, you can simply redrill the frame and move the rear suspension forward.

What type of suspension does it have? Spring or air?

Spring suspensions offer a punishing ride for what you are doing.

As for the drive shaft, once you have a final dimension, you can take that to a driveline shop to have it rewelded, balanced etc. Again, not something you can do at home unless home is a machine shop with a lathe and high powered welding equipment.

If you have to cut the frame, again, higher powered welding equipment (not a 110v Harbor Freight wire welder....) is required, along with proper welding techniques and reinforcing.

Not a job to learn on imo.

I will agree with everything 85e150six4mtod posted except the quoted above it should read " Spring suspensions offer a PUNISHING ride for what you are doing."

I agree with the punishing ride but I should have my 36ft fifthwheel or 36ft goosneck attached a lot of the time. I took it out for a spin with the enclosed 36ft goosneck and it felt pretty good.

I am assuming from that, that 1500 to 2000 lb pin weight will smooth out the ride. What I have decided after mounting the 8 ft bed I have is too have the front of another bed welded to it. I have 30 inches to the cab after the 8 ft bed is placed so I plan on leaving a 2 inch gap for flex and butt welding the front section of another bed to it.

I say I, but I mean my friend who does body work. So I will have an 8ft dually bed with a 28 inch extension that will provide a nice place to bring up my stacks and provide a nice place for chains binders and misc stuff, while keeping the side view looking like a long bed dually.

I have to raise the bed 5 inches off the frame to get the body lines right so I plan on welding 5x2x48 3/16 tube steel across the frame then mount the bed to that structure. My existing goosneck plate will have to be rasied 7 1/2 inches so that plate will stick through the bed.

What I have to figure out is how to securely mount that 7 1/2 inches above the frame and make it adjustable so my gooseneck ball and my fifth wheel hitch can be rasied or lowered de pending on the trailer I have hooked to it. I have already had all the axles flipped on my trailers because my 1 ton is a 4x4 with 20 inch wheels and everything was to short to clear the bed rails.

I think I will mock it all up with wood and go pull under the fifth wheel and goosneck. then decide which I want more, the body lines to match up or if I want to haul my trailers.

Any ideas or drawings of existing hitch hook ups would be appreciated.

You may have lucked out with that one. 92 is when the famous P-pump started showing up on the 6.6/7.8s. :-X22

wagners 06-03-2014 09:42 PM

What is that and where do I look?

nevrenufhp 06-04-2014 12:24 AM

It's the injector pump that made the Cummins 5.9 famous in 94-98 Dodges. The 2 pumps it can be are an MW-pump, or a P-pump. Sure fire way to tell is the numbers on the pump. It starts with PES6, then the next will be the model(MW or P). Either pump has some hot rodding potential.

Awesome truck Wagners :-X21
I ultimately want to exchange the regular cab on the F-600 I'm trying to obtain and replace it with a crew cab.
Here are some pictures of the truck...

Anyone know what the transmission code "AA" mean? And the axle code "AG" mean?

Best oil for 7.3 F-600 engine

What is the best oil for a 7.3 1989 F-600 Engine. In central Florida, extreme heat conditions, truck is driven very little but sometimes on long runs.

7.3 in an F600? As in a gasser 429? I thought they had either a 429 V8 gas, or 6.6 or 7.8 inline six diesel.
Either engine, I'd say regular ol Shell Rotella 15W40.

I have to ask, what kind of fuel mileage does one get in a monster like that? I see these come up for sale once in a while and I'm dying to know!
