Can someone tell me how much fluid should i put in my tranny?

1990 Ford F150
300 I6 EFI
E4OD
2WD

I just drained the fluid becuase it was slipping into 2nd after warming up and then I realized that i had over 1 - 1 1/2 inches more fluid on the stick then was supposed to be in there. so I figured there was fluid that wasnt cooling off. I didnt overfill it, I just bought it :)

Any help would be great, hey anyone recommend a brand?

Be sure you followed procedure when you measured. Different brands, models etc can have radically different procedures to measure the fluid. If you don't follow procedure you can get all kinds of inaccuracies.

I think for most modern Fords, the procedure is to run only for about 10 minutes from cold and it also depends on ambient air temps. Then keep the engine running. Park level, run thru gears starting in first and work up to OD and then neutral and finally in park. Pause about a second in each gear. Then pull the dipstick. Wipe it very dry and push it all the way back in then pull again and measure. Doesn't hurt to repeat. Check the manual or find someone who knows your model.

You want to see the fluid level between the hash marks. You don't want to see a lot of bubbles. If you used a white cloth, you prefer to see red fluid or maybe dark pink. Brown or black is usually bad.

Take a sniff of the fluid. Should smell nice and chemically. Burnt smell is bad.

If the level is correct and the color and smell are good, then something else in the tranny is causing a problem.

With a 90 model year, you may have a lot of miles which might mean you are having slippage which will eventually require an overhaul.

Oo. I dropped the pan yesterday and I drained some dark brown color fluid out and found an aftermarket filter installed so I feel better about someone changeing it atleast once in the 13 years of its life. I added Castrol Dextron III / Mercon ATF fluid to the transmisson plus some Tranny cleaner and the transmissions shifts 1000% better and no slips anymore, thanks everyone for reading, thanks even more for posting!:-X06
