got the distributor removed now i think you have to remove the drive gear to replace the pickup coil? does any one know the procedure to remove it the right way?

Been a while since I messed with one, but as I recall, you do everything from the top. Two flathead screwdrivers at opposite sides of the reluctor with a gentle prying motion should pull it straight up and off the distributor shaft, it's located by a small roll pin (don't lose it!) in a slot.

After that, it should be easy to remove the pickup coil mounting plate, and be sure to check the centrifugal advance to make sure it moves easily and that it's greased.

Well, that's a part of doing a regular tune-up. The rotor just pulls straight up.
