Ooops, smashed my truck...(pictures)

Here is my 1998 NASCAR F150. I had a small fender bender...I put a ding in the grill, bumper, fender and hood.

I always keep full coverage on all my 4 trucks and 2 cars but found it disturbing that Progressive totaled my truck over such a minor deal?...BTW...I told them I would keep my truck and fix it myself

I know the damage cost has to be a percentage of the vehicle's total value, but dang, they totaled it?

Wow.

That is crazy such minor damage gets a total on a domestic vehicle.
It looks like several thousand in damages though so yea I can see where they are coming from.
CHeaper to pay the truck off for them.

Something to remember about insurance companies and how they view trucks like yours. Is that to them there is no value difference between your truck and a sun of the mill 98 150 reg cab and short box. That fact that it is a nascar edition in this case, and the same with the nites and Harley trucks. Which is just ridiculous. So if to them a 98 150 reg. cab short box 2wd is only worth $2500, then that's what your nascar edition is worth. And then if the damage exceeds $500-$1000 on the initial estimate they will more than likely total the vehicle, since they will 9 times out of 10 find additional damage that exceed the total cost of the vehicle. And that's why they wanted to just write off your truck.

Whats crazy is they give me $4200.00 plus I got to keep the truck. So the estimate had to be more than that to fix it.

The only other damage other than the hood, fender, bumper and grill was the front tire (it was scrubbing on the bumper when I drove it home) Which gives me reason to buy a set of new wheels and tires - 285/50ZR-18 (and lower it another 2"):-jammin

Soooooooo did they not give you a copy of your estimate? And the cost to repair doesn't need to exceed the total value of the truck. It just needs to exceed a certain percentage of the vehicles value. And that value changes all the time. I have seen it go from as low as 20% to as high as 100+%. And there are several factors that can alter the required percentage. Such as Used parts availability, salvage prices. age of vehicle, and condition. Local economy I was told can affect the percentage required to total a vehicle. Heck I know someone who had their vehicle totaled because a wheel was damaged and the insurance adjustor said he couldn't locate a replacement. But regardless your adjustor should have given a copy of your estimate of your damages. And also labor rates and tow bills if there are any can render a total loss on a vehicle

I was traveling down the road I live on behind my neighbor in his 1-ton Ford flat-bed and wasn't paying attention and he was turning into the drive of his chicken house and I was a little too late on the brakes and hit his vise in the Reese hitch and the corner of the steel bed. I was going 10-15 mph

USAA insurance totaled my baby for this horse ****. fishttailed in cold weather and jumped a curb. Initial estimate to repair was 3,5K. 2003 lightning.
IF YOU OWN A LIGHTNING DO NOT USE USAA! After initial estimate, the adjusters added redic stuff, subtracted very blantant issues from wreck, then said 8.5K to fix. I paid to tow it to a decent shop for another legit estimate. 5,3. Prior to wreck KBB was at min 11.5K. USAA went on to comparisons of my truck to crappier ones with more miles. Yet those Lightning's were worth 12.5 and 15K. USAA then had the audacity to appraise it as a non lightning somehow. Its been over a month since wreck. They said its a total loss but now after i threw a fit the claims adjusters ignore my calls. I'm filing a complaint with the state, putting their mistreatment on full blast on every F-150 forum I can find. https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.for...3bea29b886.jpg

Day of wreck. USAA Thinks this 03 Lightning is worth 9K

Same day of the wreck. USAA says this 2003 lightning is only worth 9K in this pic due to pre-existing damage. (hood chipping)

Really? total loss? jumped a curb and hit a pole. Top notch truck, 107K miles.

Most insurance companies take one of 2 routes....what is the cheapest way to get out of this or they will repair at up to 80% of the value.....

krewat 03-11-2016 09:37 AM

Not sure about your state, but in New York, if they "total" the vehicle, even if you keep it, it winds up with a "salvage" title - so you have to reregister it, plus I think, pay to have the salvage title done.
