World's Largest Diesel Engine!!

I'm sure this is probably a repost, but I thought I'd post it anyway incase there were a few who hadn't seen it yet.... :)

What are those things used for?

Probably for ships. Don't get too carried away with it yet. The Iowa class battleships put out 212,000shp, and that is a modest number in todays terms. Although I would like to rev that thing at a ricer.

I'm just waiting for someone to come in here and say, "Well, my Dodge is more powerful than that..." :-X02 :-X04

And by the way... where's the turbo? :)

The second paragraph in the link says they are designed primarily for large container ships.

Awesome! Container ships are those that load the "trailer" part of tractor trailers onto huge ships for across the ocean transport. It is how you get most of your Walmart goods from China :D

2300 tons for an engine, more than a WWII destroyer.

I was an Engineman in the Navy and I worked on some big diesels but none that even comes close to that monster. The biggest I have ever worked on was in the neighborhood of 2000 horsepower @ 720 RPM.

Who needs turbos? What, 100,000 hp and over 5.6 MILLION lbs of torque aren't enough?

Wow, the crank alone weighs more than an entire railroad diesel locomotive. I'd hate to be around if that thing threw a rod!

Of course, the ship this thing will go in will never see more than 40mph at best- that's about 35knts. Max cruise speed will probably be around 19-20knts.

Yeah I didn't see a turbo anywhere either. That thing doesn't even come close to whats on my ship. The ship engines have 12 cyl, 24 piston (vertically opposed) turbocharged railroad diesels. 3,600 Shaft HP each. I have no idea what kind of torque it puts out.

Having been around some of the 200 ton pay haulers at the Berkley Pit in Butte, Mt., I thought they were huge. That engine is absolutely incrredible. They must set it in place and build the ship around it.
