Man you flat out don't mess around when it comes to yanking a motor. What is that were the turbo mounts? Thanks for postin pics and sharing what's going on.

That's the 'bucket mod'. It helps keep track of nuts and bolts that have been removed from the engine. :p We had it out picking thru the engine to trans bolts so we could bolt engine to stand.

Today, engine and engine bay will get cleaned and painted, then we'll flip engine over for oil pan replacement. :-X22

Oh yeah, looks like we are gonna need a new CAC. This may explain max of 10psi boost (truck is ALL stock):

How come you took off the front end?

Low ceiling in the shop... ;) You know how I roll - I make it work with what I have!! :-X04 At least I'm not on the side of the road - remember Alex :-huh in AK??

I'm having a BLAST so far. As rusty as this thing is, everything has been easy so far. Toooo easy. :-X16 This place is beautiful - even though it is unseasonably WARM - I'm enjoying time with friends and getting to give Frank his truck the kind of love it can't get at the 'mechanic'. He will be PROUD of this thing when he sees it next!! :-jammin

Feeling that twitch come back...
Even tho i just buttoned up TXtinct... wanna yank another one...

Just so dang hot down here in South Republic.

Bonanza35 09-11-2013 12:52 PM

Reps Jason. You guys are so quick at this, need to put some injectors, springs and turbo on this before you return it. You can tell him it was the oil pan that slowed it down.

Is that the front or the back of the IC? Any idea what perforated it? Seems like a well protected location.

Punisher29073 09-11-2013 09:31 PM

What was wrong with the oil pan?

After we cleaned it up - there is nothing obvious... Maybe a trans cooler line leak? I was suspicious because the boost was LOW during test drive before engine extraction. Boots were all tight and turbo looks fine. :-huh

Well, for some reason everything up here RUSTS AWAY eventually. :-X15 The oil pans take a beating because they get sandblasted with road salt and gravel, coated in mud and then heated/cooled on a regular basis. Once the thin factory powder coat is compromised - the end has begun.

The new pan has truck bedliner coating on it and I bet the owner becomes more attentive to keeping it clean and touching up the paint as needed. ;)

Lemme know if ya find a pill for that twitch!! :p This is still a LOT of work... :-X16

And wouldn't ya freakin' know it is HOT and HUMID up here right now!!!! It's much cooler at my house. I'm drinking a gallon of water a day and still melting. :o Not at all what I expected!

Lol. Yes, my standard recommendation anymore is at least 238/100's, T4/S468 and the 'supporting mods'. :-X04 But Frank would never even know it was there. This is not a hot rod or a heavy hauler - just transportation for a 6'-7" tall guy. He loves his truck, because it FITS. And because it runs on WVO! :-X04

I don't mind fixing one up 'stock'. There is something to be said for how smooth and quiet a stock truck is. Its always nice to hear something run RIGHT. It also helps if it LOOKS GOOD!! :-jammin Dunno if it'll run right yet - but it WILL look good! :-X22

SkySkiJason 09-11-2013 10:31 PM

Engine got p-washed today to remove rust scale and finish degreasing it, then hauled back into the shop and placed on the engine stand. The truck was drug out and the engine bay descaled and degreased as well.

Up-pipe to manifold bolts were rusted to paper-thin and were NEVER coming out, so we decided to remove the exhaust manifolds. ONE bolt came out with a wrench... The rest came out with help from our friends oxygen and acetylene. ;) The bolts all came out of heads pretty easily, but a couple required some thermal persuasion from the MAP gas torch. We decided we'd at least try to extract the bolts from the manifolds. I'll be damned if we didn't get them all out!!! Unbelievable - seriously....

I am more of a believer in Kroil than ever!! Every bolt I thought I might be removing got hosed down the minute I saw the truck, and I sprayed them all again a few times for good measure. Its miracle stuff. ;)

The new oil pan got bedliner applied and I really wanted to install it today, but we are still waiting for sealant, dipstick thingy, etc. We did get new SS fuel lines and some other goodies from www.veggiegarage.com and a box from Riffraff. :-jammin

Tomorrow we'll rebuild the turbo and pedestal, paint the engine, paint the engine bay, (source a new CAC?), install new GP's and hopefully get the parts to rebuild oil cooler and re-install the oil pan... :-X18

Bonanza35 09-11-2013 10:58 PM

What is Kroil? Is it at the parts store?

machmedic 09-11-2013 11:17 PM

I used to live in upstate NY near Plattsburgh so I know what kind of rust issues you are dealing with. Sounds like it's going pretty good. Keep up the great work!

PS: I moved to NC to get away from the rust and snow.

Penetrating-Lubricating Oils

I worked in an engine shop at our airline for several years and we used the aero kroil version. Talk about engines that are subject to heat soak and some bolts that need a little help when it comes time to remove them......

Not sure why though, they have the worst spray nozzles of any aerosol can I've ever used. If you try to just squeeze a little out instead of a full blast stream it will almost always squirt backwards and hit you in the eye,,,,,,,Ur, I mean safety glasses, yeah cause we never forgot to put them on, yeah. :-down

SkySkiJason 09-12-2013 10:23 AM

Yes, we have used 1/2 an 'industrial size' can of aerokroil on this project. I took a pic of it perched on top of the engine - I'll post it when I get a chance to upload the pics! :-X22

Oil pan is on, we have located a new 6.0 CAC to replace the leaky stocker and almost all the parts are here now! Time to rebuild turbo, EBPV, oil cooler, paint and detail the engine and engine bay. :-drink

Amen. I need to move away from the Northeast.

Your friend is going to be one happy 7.3L owner again.

Lovin' the pics!:)

If it matters Jason it has been REALLY hot here the last 3 days. Prob still cooler over your way though

SkySkiJason 09-12-2013 10:08 PM

After moving the truck back inside, I did a little work on the frame, etc:

http://i107.photobucket.com/albums/m...psca00fcf8.jpg

Oil pan got installed this AM, 1/2 the block is painted, the oil cooler is disassembled and painted, the exhaust manifolds were cleaned and painted, CAC tubes painted.

I'm going to bed! :-X17

Mowing Man 09-12-2013 10:28 PM

Your thread kinda makes me want to yank mine again so I can do all the stuff I didn't know to do back then...that engine pull was most of the reason I started reading on FTE. I couldn't get my oil pan to seal up right, and ended up having to yank it out again immediately. Wasnt using the Ford super goop and engine wasnt upside down. Doooh!

Nicmike 09-12-2013 11:31 PM

Great thread, great work and what a rusty truck!

Well, it went from mid-summer HOT to kinda chilly today!! I'm sure it was warmer this AM than it is now. No complaints though, its just cool enough to enjoy standing by the woodstove in the shop! :-X22

Jason, thats a good idea with the ratchet strap. Just tucked that away in my things to remember. As much as I like working on my truck from time to time, I sure hope I don't ever have to pull the engine. Its rust free even though I live in jersey.

Thanks! :-X22

It will be... I'm helping Wvo and svo diesel to vegetable oil conversion kit | VeggieGarage.com develop a kit to replace the OE fuel lines for Vegistroke-type VO conversions. We currently just add check valves at the heads and screw the vibra-loc adapters and stock lines into the check valves - but these 1/8" CV's aren't very robust and have enough of a failure rate we want an alternative.

These lines are waaay bigger than they need to be and the hoses were sized to be routed differently. What we did was make what we had work. :-roll The 'kit' won't look like this - I'm not happy with it... :-X15

SkySkiJason 09-15-2013 10:45 PM

Well, its all back together and the starter worked about 45 secs total before it appears to have retired. :-X15 Perhaps it didn't like the clean-up job I gave it. The thing was rusty and greasy as hell...

We will have to see what is on the shelf in town tomorow - no time to shop around or get this one rebuilt. :(

Nicmike 09-15-2013 11:11 PM

Better now than after you were headed home!

SkySkiJason 09-21-2013 02:50 PM

Sorry for not updating this!! Everything went pretty smoothly and after replacing the starter with a lifetime mitsubishi from napa (includes free TOWING as well!!!) - it fired up and had no leaks or problems. The brakes were FUBAR with stuck calipers, etc so I didn't get to put as many miles as I would have liked before loading it back on the trailer. We replaced the frozen/locked front caliper back at Frank's, but the studs were breaking as we tried to remove the other wheel.... I tapped-out because I was out of time - but I think his local 'mechanic' can handle the rest of the brakes. I left him a stellar example to follow!! :p

More pics later tonite. We didn't get home until 4am this AM - I'm gonna take a nap!! :-X04

Well, this trip was 3243 miles total and the only issue with my truck was changing a veggie pre-pump filter (dunno how old it was...:-roll). We burned about 4 gals of diesel and about 300gals of WVO. The old tow-pig is still on top of its game with almost 370k miles on the ticker!! :-X22
