Folding/Extending mirror lubrication
All,
Has anyone found a way to lubricate the fancy mirrors we have? On my 2011, the passenger side mirror stopped folding in this past spring, so I got out the silicone spray lube and sprayed into the hinges on both mirrors, and it took care of the problem. Now, same side(passenger), it won't always extend, but if I manually extend/retract it, then use the button, it works. Dont want to spend the big bucks on a new mirror, there has to be a way to get some lubrication in there. Was going to just try spraying the shafts where they go into the mirror housing to see if that reduces some friction. Thanks for any advice. Dave |
I'm having the same problem with the driver's side mirror extension on my 2011. If I give it a push, it starts working (for now).

Something my old man taught me, and still holds true today:
Does it move? NO Is it supposed to move? YES - WD40 Does it move? YES Is it supposed to move? NO - Duct Tape :D Seriously, I used some WD40 on my driver's mirror and it's now quiet and smooth. Give it a shot. |
You guys just point it there and spray everything?
|
LOL, no just at the hinges and in between the arms. Almost everything...
|
Lol, I didn't quite mean it like that, my bad. But I am a "more is better" kinda guy....
I'm gonna add this to my PM |
WD-40 is pretty harmless to most materials. The only thing I can think of that might harmed is if they use any sort of adhesive to hold the glass in. :-drink

WD-40 is a mix of solvent and light lube that is meant to displace water (moisture). It does that very well, but it attracts dust and grime to it very badly, which will result in a build-up on those moving parts.
I would probably try something else first, probably a "dry lube" spray, generally either (or , not sure which would be better), , or even . |
Yup, there's those as well. Any of them should work.
|
yea, I have tried silicone spray, did the trick on the folding problem. I am just out of that at the momet.
|
I would avoid silicone spray as well, as it will still collect dirt and grime just as bad as oil-based lubricants. It's not that it won't work, but over time it's harder on things and will have to be done more often.

ok, will try that too. i have graphite spray lock lubricant.
