Squeaky Brakes
 

For starters, here are a few problems I always seem to have with vehicles.
1) I don't drive them. Things rust, and wear out very prematurely.
2) On that note, I am very light on brakes. I could go 100k on a set of brakes. I'm pretty much positive I glaze them, and they eventually squeak.
3) When towing, again, light on brakes, but only towing 4k-7k. And not very often either

So last week, my truck was at Ford to perform the tranny TSB. Replace solenoids in trans, reflash computer. No biggie. Brakes have been squeaking for about 2000 miles or so, so I mention it. Guy calls up and says the rears are collecting rust, and killing themselves. Inside rears are shot. So, they decided to replace pads, skim rotors (I would guess some small amount per side just to clean them up), install a Ford anti-squeak kit, and put it all back together. Great, problem solved, right?

They still squeak, and it drives me completely nuts. In my mind, can't you figure out how to get this right? $60k truck should not have squeaking brakes. It's pretty bad too, at least in my opinion.

Now what? Slotted rotors? I have no interest at all at even touching the thing. Not one bit. It shouldn't even be my problem under warrantee.

Thoughts? The Ford "anti-squeak" kit it just a shim of sorts. I know the protocol used to be to put that orange stop squeak stuff on there. I haven't seen anybody use that in years, but maybe that's the trick. Who know. I'm no brake expert, and don't claim to be either.

Me too.. my brakes squeak intermittenly. Some days are good, others sounds like its time for a brake job. Must be dependant on the outside conditions.

What can happen is a couple of this.....if the oem linings are ceramic, they can build up dust on the surface of the lining which can cause the "squeak" and cleans itself when you put on a little pressure. What can also happen is if they (linings/pads) get hot, the shims the oems use are well, minimal...you are not going to like this but, I purchase stainless steel (sheet metal type) scrap and make my own....should be 16 gauge or thinner...and that resolves that issue.

I would take it back to Henry Ford and take the head tech on a ride to demonstrate.

Had the same problem, but alum rims were so hot could cook an egg on them, brought back to the (St)ealer and $800 later complete brake overhaul, calipers, rotors brakes. SA stayed pads jammed in calipers, cooking the rubber boots on the pistons and jamming the bakes on! Not covered under warranty, because brakes pads caused it????? Anyways not happy and calling Ford. TSB AS-21800 reference.

Hey Dave. I agree the know what the problem is, only because they have a Ford Part Number for "Anti Squeak kit"... It's like $14 I think. And in my opinion doesn't work. My brakes are absolutely horrible at this point. Got about 6000 miles on them. I thought they would settle in and stop squeaking, but they just continue to get worse...

I have a friend that own's a shop in town. Been working on trucks for a very long time, and claims to have the recipe to get them to stop squeaking, however it does include new pads/rotors. That's a pi$$er seeing as though the pads/rotors are like brand new, but he says the Ford stuff always squeaks on the 3/4 and 1 tons.

Probably just squeak my way through the summer anyways.
