In search of Ford part F7TZ-9S278-CA

I am searching high and low for Ford part F7TZ-9S278-CA which is a "Fuel Feed Tube" for my 97 F-250HD 5.8L V8 4X4 with dual fuel tanks.

After a recent fill-up I switched to my rear fuel tank and after doing this fuel started pouring out of my front filler cap. The mechanic determined the check valve needed to be replaced. Upon searching for the above Ford part number I was informed this part has been discontinued and to my disappointment I learned it is a "Ford only" part.

So at the present time I can only use one of my fuel tanks until I can somehow locate this specific part. Any help on locating this either new, or used through a junk yard, would be greatly appreciated!!!

For the cross filling situation you will need a new Fuel Delivery Module, it contains the "check valve" that is causing your fuel transfer problem.. They are available at most decent auto parts stores, and also on Rockauto . com..

Here is a diagram of it.

Thank you! I will check into this.

Hi White 97 xlt, I checked with the mechanic and I confirmed he already replaced the FDM. So the Fuel Feed Tube is what I am looking for. Apparently this tube runs from the high pressure end of the fuel filter all the way back to the rear fuel tank and there is an integrated check valve on this line. The part can be viewed here: 1997 Ford F-250 Fuel Feed Tube | FordParts.com

Which FDM did they already replace? Front or rear

If the front tank is being filled by the rear tank the front FDM should have been changed. Perhaps Ford finally did add more fuel check valves by 1997, but prior to that the check valves are in the Fuel Delivery Modules from 1990 and later.

Maybe yours is different but my 97 HD has 2 check valves, ONE in each FDM..

There were some add on check valves used by Ford that fit outside the tanks when this problem first showed up. I have only seen a picture of one and never one in person, I suppose a unicorn would be as easy to find.

To repeat, if he replaced the rear FDM, he wasted his time and your money as far as repairing the fuel transfering to the front tank.

Hi rla 2005, The mechanic did replace the FDM in the front tank. I already had the rear fuel tank and FDM replaced some time ago.

Hi White 97 xlt, I made the conscious decision to replace the FDM when the tank was replaced. It would be just my luck I use the old FDM and it craps out on me. I took a pic of the old FDM so if I will try to figure out how to post it here.

This is a pic of the old FDM from my front tank: http://s1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg481/GL523/?action=view¤t=null-2402.jpg&evt=user_media_share

Sounds like you have a defective FDM, warranty it with another one and that should fix your problem. Been there and done that. What issue I hate is dealing with two full gas tanks.......again!

Hi Eddiec1564, The mechanic has already replaced the FDM on my front fuel tank so I'm all set there. What I need is the fuel feed tube which runs from the fuel filter to the rear fuel tank. Here's a link to the the diagram from Ford:

If that "fuel feed tube" is supposed to have a check valve, that is not going to fix the problem of filling the front tank. The check valve is there to prevent fuel from back flowing from one tank to the other. Whether that check valve is internal to the FDM or inline to said FDM, the problem you have is with the front, not the rear.

I sincerely think you are going down the wrong path. I would hate to see you spend all this time and effort on chasing down this part only find out your issue is not resolved. More than once someone has gotten a bad FDM (or 2-3).

Take my comments for what they are worth, it's free. I wish you luck.

Thanks for your message rla 2005. I want to make sure I understand you correctly though. Are you suggesting the FDM in the rear tank has gone bad and that this is why the front tank is overflowing? I actually had the rear tank and fuel pump replaced in May of 2010. The mechanic who worked on my truck yesterday replaced both the front fuel tank and the FDM. There was quite a bit of corrosion on the front tank so I thought it would be better to replace both this and the FDM. When I drove home on the front tank yesterday everything seemed fine. I'm pretty sure though that if I flip the switch to the rear tank the fuel will start flowing out of the front filler cap.

No, the front FDM is bad. With a bad check valve the fuel returning from the engine will flow into the tank with the bad valve as well as the one with the fuel pump active. This will eventually fill the inactive tank because there is no fuel running to engine.

THE FRONT FMD is DEFECTIVE! Brand new part can BE DEFECTIVE. I had to replace a DEFECTIVE FMD twice! Had brand new parts(not rebuilt) defective before. can happen an does happen..................

Have your mechanic WARRANTY the repair, if he don't, Time for another mechanic who does honor warranties of work/parts they use/do.
