oil filter
Does anyone know if there is a cartridge style over-the-counter oil filter that will work in a 239 flathead?

NAPA # 1006. I have also used #1004 in a pinch. They are good quality WIX filters.

I think I just need the cartridge element. The engine has most everything else in your illustration. I have thought about adding a spin on conversion but at least in the short term I am looking for a cartridge element I can use without having to mail-order it.

The filter element is as described by Tinman, NAPA stocks them. The filter system does not lend itself to using a spin-on because it only filters 5% or so of the oil pumped by the engine, and gravity drains to the oil pan. There are ways to convert to a modern 95% filtration system with remote spin-on element, but they require complete engine disassembly and modification.

Since oil filters were an option back then, are you asking for the cartridge oil filter element (6731) only, or a complete cartridge oil filter assembly?
