2002 7.3 starting problem.

Tried to start my Ex today and it tries to start but than sounds like something is grinding, on a 2nd or 3rd try it starts. The sound is similar to if you try to start an already running veh. Any ideas??

Sounds like the starter is going out to me.

Also, check to make sure the starter bolts are all tight. It's not a frequent problem, but it's also not uncommon for them to back out.

I would agree with Stewart, starter sounds like it's toast.... the gear itself, but change out the whole thing and be done with. Also be sure to take off old one prior to picking up new one, as there are two different types for this motor.... a 2 bolt and a 3... most common I've seen are the 2 bolt ones though... also will have the "core" already with you.

As per the rest, check the starter bolts, then replace the starter....

On most 2002 trucks, the 2 bolt gear reduction starter is what came stock. If you find a 3 bolt, (longer, heavier, and harder to install) replace it with the 2 bolt gear reduction starter.
