6.2 Mileage down but with a fix!

Hello FTE!

The other day I did a basic under the hood check of the truck to make sure everything was at proper levels. During the check up, I found I had a problem in which the purchasing dealer was closer, I would have probably had some words with them. What made the check up a bit more painful is my local dealer missed it during the ESP inspection. It takes 3 minutes to pop open the air filter box. Easy 20 bucks for the dealer. I found this.

A dirty air filter! I am not kidding but this filter was black as coal. (Ironically I bought the truck in NE PA or what use to be coal country) This filter didn't look like it was changed in over 20,000 miles if not more. It was one of the worst air filters I have seen in a car, truck and even in construction equipment.

Mileage wise I could never get more than 13 MPG and average around 12.0 per hand and truck's estimates. The "instant" MPG would never be better than 12.8 This is with mixed driving. (commute is 40% stop and go or lights and 60% interstate) Figured this was normal for a fairly truck with a large engine.

So I drove over to Wally world. $11 later, new FRAM filter. Filled the tank since I was going to need gas. Low and behold, better gas mileage! I thought about the whole K&N filter but I figure that is good money for hype and since I have an ESP on the truck for another 60K, if there were a problem. You know damn well Ford would be "the aftermarket filter cause the problem. Warranty denied!" Right now, the mileage is in the mid 13s with stop and go driving. I can't wait to see what the highway is going to look like.

In other news, my right foot really likes the long skinny pedal. The 6.2 has one of the nicest exhaust notes. My wife has commented a number of times how quiet the truck is while driving at normal RPMs and how quiet the truck is when the RPMs are higher.

What the heck! I bet some cheap ******* switched out their dirty for your clean one.

I would have to go over 60,000 + miles for my filter to even look close to that level :-X15

Hello,

I pulled almost 15 MPG per the lieometer (trip gauge not fuel economy) this morning going into work. It went down when I got on the gas :D Also noticed the truck "breathed" easier during the drive. It felt like there was not as much of a struggle perse. I don't know if it was a psychological or not.

Whatever that was going on is in the past. The fix was easier.

Knowing me I would have sent it back to the selling dealer :)

Hi!

Well after having the new air filter in, the mileage has been better than expected. It looks like I'm getting around 10.5-11 MPG towing. Highway cruising around 16-16.5 MPG. Around town its around 14 MPG. Works for me and I will not be complaining about mileage :D

I average about 11-12.8 mpg. Not bad for a 1 ton dually that's loaded most of the time. I happy. Really happy it's not a diesel.
Diesel too problematic.:-wink

I get about the same mileage and have an F350 CC 4x4 lariat. I'm so impressed with mileage and just about everything with this truck; power, comfort, towing, and on and on. I came from a Chevy and for anyone complaining about your mileage, go drive a Chevy for a week. You won't complain anymore. I actually call this my little fuel sipper now. LOL. I actually wish dealers posted their mileage on 3/4 and 1 tons, but a lot of them are lies anyway. Mileage really matters at the price of fuel now and this trucks just is so much more truck than what I had. It's a win-win.

was that in a new truck?

Just changed my air filter at 46k, it looked just like yours. The truck has never been to the dealer or any garage for that matter, I guess they just get dirty quick.

I know, never really thought about it until I saw this thread. I checked the manual and it said 30k so I changed it. Everything being high interval (100k) these days it’s easy to dismiss things.

I checked mine the other day and at 16K noticed it slightly dirty, but it operates in more off road/ dusty condition and I figure it's cheap insurance to change it more often even if it doesn't look total shot. It's like the lung of the truck, got to keep it clean and healthy.
