F600 Engine??

I have a 1978 F600 Dump Truck that I know the engine was replaced in. I found the machine shop tag that says 429 but I also found what I think is the engine tag is on the distributor cap.

The valve covers have 5 bolts so I think a 361 or 390. The engine block tag is attached.http://thebuildingspecialist.com/wp-...-Block-Tag.jpg

I didn't check far, but found, and IIRC, the FT was produced until '78.

5 bolts is an FE/FT. The "385" series 429 would have 7 bolts.

Your intake manifold should extend under the valve covers.

While the bore and stroke is identical, the FT motors are refered to in slightly different CID numbers.

359/361, and 389/391. The smaller numbered engines were smog motors or U-haul specials, or some other variation.

The 330 used the same stroke as the 352/360/359/361, but has a smaller bore.

Externally the only way to check is via a wire or small dowel down a plug hole. 3.5" = 330 or 361, 3.78 = 391.

The tag you posted looks like a carb tag. A reman tag will say the rebuilder name, and have numbers indicating the oversize of the piston, and undersize of the mains and rods. " .030 .010 .010" or similar.

Your engine should have an iron front cover that incorporates the front engine mount, and the rear engine mounts should be incorporated into the bell.

Thanks for the great info. I'll check the items that you said. It does have the machinist tag on the back of the motor. I forgot what it says, but it's something like the cylinder bore and etc with the date and the number 429. A friend of mine said it's a 361 but it was built using the 429 block so that's why it says 429 on the tag. I need to get a carb, wires and distributor so want to be sure of the model. Looks like it has a rather tall oil filter too.

Your friend is wrong.

The 361 is an FT series engine, the 429 is a 385 series engine. NOTHING interchanges, least of all the block.

The D8TE-12127-GA tag you posted is the original FoMoCo 6.4L 389 4V FT engine distributor ID tag.

'Course, who knows what engine is in there today? Carb tag would have 9510 stamped on it.

runjhike: 370/429/460 = SEVEN valve cover bolts per side / FE/FT engines have FIVE valve cover bolts per side.

389 = smog motor version of the 391. 4.05 x 3.78, just like the 390 and 391.

Thanks. Never heard of that engine size before.
