2011 F250 GVWR v 2012 F250 GVWR

Hi Everyone! :) I'm looking to buy a "new to me" F250, primary use will be to tow a fifth wheel. The configuration I'm most interested in is the extended cab, 4x2, 6.2L gas engine with the 6.5 ft bed.

However, all the specs I've found list the GVWR at 9,400 for the 2011 with a max payload of 3,020 versus the 2012 or 2013 trucks with a GVWR of 10,000 and a max payload of 3,800. Why the huge difference? And, if I do buy a 2011, can it be updated to the higher GVWR and payload? Or I'm I pretty much limited to the 9,400?

Thanks in advance for all your help!

The truck can be upgraded to handle the extra weight, but you'll still be legally limited to what the rating is on the Vehicle Certification Label on the door. I would be especially wary of exceeding that rating if I lived in California. The best advice would be to look for a 2012 or newer or expand your search to include an F350.

Buy a F350

The issue was when you bought your truck it was downgraded on the door cert only. Both are technically the same.

If you are buying a 5er I would go big with the F350 so you get the best door cert. Be sure to check it this time.

Thanks for the replies. I haven't bought a truck yet and will look at the F350 as well. Still odd the 2011 is rated 600 pounds less:-arrgh
