Swapping Sides - 6.2 to 6.7
 
I finally went & done it!

I have been kicking around the idea of trading the 2011 which is still clean and in good shape and while it has some real resale value. I have always been the guy who drives the wheels off maybe 8-10 years 200ką miles. But, I thought I would try it.

Even though I really like the 6.2 I have kept a spreadsheet since new and my overall average is 11 mpg. Remember though I have oversized tires/ 3.73 lots of everyday weight with tool box, bumpers, dog in the back seat, etc.... Everyday curb weight is 8250#. I drive it like I stole it and idle like a diesel driver (Rebel likes A/C in our Texas weather).

This time i decided to try the 6.7. If I can pull 15 mpg average (hopefully) it should save enough to pay for the more expensive motor in 2-3 years. Plus the increased torque will be a bonus when pulling skid steer/equipment.

At 60K - running the Mike's (5Star) SCT tunes since 2500 miles and have had NO problems. Since new the only time it has been in the shop was for the transmission shifting (2-3) problem (fixed with solenoids) , about 20 oil changes ( I'm old school - change every 3-4K), about 5 air filters, replaced Rancho's with Bilsteins at 25K, 7 new tires from Discount Tire (put mud grips on at 800 miles) but tend to ruin a few at the ranch. Also, windshield washer motor went out around 50k.

Regular Daily drive weight - 8250#
Truck/Trailer with Skid Steer GVCW - 23K
Heaviest realized (weighed at Rock Quarry) GVCW - 28,600#

So i won't be here in the 6.2 forum as much but should be in the 6.7 Forum where I know a lot of y'all hang out also..
Also will be spending a little time at the Dieselstop talking with Crystal (Tracking Build) while mine is getting built (for the next 6-8 Weeks)..

Since I am basically getting the same rig & will set it up the same except the 6.7 instead of 6.2 I'll be able to weigh the differences between the two. I will say that most of the time I was running the 93 octane Perf tune so mine was probably one of the hotter 6.2's - For you guys that are still contemplating running tunes - Just go for it - I'm proof that they don't create problems (except lead foot) }>

I'll be listening for your comparison between the two as you log some miles on your new diesel. I'm enjoying my 6.2 other than the mileage, but considering in 3-4 years upgrading to the diesel.

I think you will be happy, I was really considering a diesel when I got the 6.2 but so far I cant wipe the smile off my face. I actually think my wife is a little jealous cause she said I break out in a big ole smile every time I talk about my truck. Cant argue with her though.. I was curious, if you decide to off load that 5 star, I would really be interested. I have wanted to get one, but I am kinda conservative with the mod funds and have bought mud flap and weather beaters along with the upfitter switches and harness and some hella lights for the back end... so anyway just thought I would touch bases and offer up to purchase if you so decide to sell it. I will be watching for your updates. Take Care

wish you the best of luck with the swap. i'll be sticking with the 6.2, as I don't do too much pulling to begin with. Plus, my employer supplies me with a fuel card. The only time I really pay for my own fuel is if I take a road trip out of state for pleasure....and even then I fuel up before I leave and return on fumes }>

Congrats Byram! That 6.7 is such a monster, I drove KC8QVO's (Steve) at an Ohio meet. Breaking the tires loose with 16k lbs behind it is a good feeling, that's for sure. I'm sure you won't be disappointed.

So what are the details of the new rig? Color/cab, maybe something a little more spoiling like the Lariat? ;)

Will be the fanciest I ever owned! ( Figure I'm past 50 & single and can treat myself)..

F350 4x4 SC long bed/ 6.7/ 3.55 Elock -Lariat with the interior package - Heated/Cooled seats... Camper pkg/ 4x4 pkg (Skid plates) - 1 color - Kodiak Brown with Black interior... }>

Left it with the 18" tires after researching the Goodrich MT's I'll be putting on it...

Will be putting a B&W GN ball instead of Ford's option. Aftermarket rhino liner (probably) because I didn't want it til after the B&W goes in..

Does anyone know whether the 2011 weatherTech (Fronts) will fit in a '13 or has there been a floor change? Seem like I remember something in 2012..

Will be transferring the Oasis XD 4000 to the '13 - BEST tool I have ever owned!!:-X06

They did change the floor for MY 2012 Job 2, something with the dead pedal I believe.

Byram - seems to me it will take approx. 160,000 miles to pay for the $8000 diesel engine premium using fuel savings only - diesel at $3.75 and 15mpg = $.25/mile; gas at $3.25 and 11mpg = $.30/mile - so diesel is only a nickel a mile cheaper than gas - not counting the extra costs of maintenance on a diesel vs a gas engine, it would take 160,000 miles to breakeven on the diesel engine premium - or several years - good luck with your new truck.

I worked numbers like that also... But -after figuring the miles that I drive - with the potential above the 15mpg mark I figured it would work. Also the diesel is actually less than that with the invoice at 6900 and some rebates that are Diesel only - not for gas... Also - my lifestyle is changing and I will be doing more "Empty" Highway /Increased miles/year -

Plus the diesel does bring a premium in my area on resale...

By the way - I have been a gasser since my 97 7.3 lemon - Gave it back to Ford in '01 - I have always calculated it as you did... But now I have real world with both and can see that the Diesel "Should" be the right move for me...

Best of luck to you with that 6.7! those things are awesome and I would have bought one but my job and driving habits changed. I got a company vehicle so my truck sits all week except when I drive to the gym when I get home which is about 10 min away. Driving habits like that would kill a diesel plus I dont pull often and when I do its well under 10k. If I drove everyday like I used to I probably would have bought a diesel because it would get use and get to temp every time out.

Sounds like a nice truck....absolutely treat yourself....you only live once!

Oh and yes to the change on the floor mats....my truck was built in November of 2012 when they first orderd my weather techs they were for a 2011 which did not work. I can not answer if it changed again for the '13's

Boy me and the old 01 V10 are really falling behind here! Fixing to be changing jobs, so a Diesel will be in my future as well, for the added fuel mileage. My V10 gets about 14.5-15 on the highway, and I`m told the 6.7 will do 20+. But we are for sure still going to be together a while, since it`s only got 43,450 miles on it.....

I got out of an 01 v-10 - 168000 - got the 11 -6.2 in summer of 2010. Now changing to 6.7. I really liked the v-10 but the 6.2 ran circles around it.

Mine has 4.30`s, but you are not the first that said a 6.2 was a better engine, I`ve never driven one so I can`t say first hand, but I am interested to know.
