65 f100 loose shifter

darn near impossible for me to put this 65 f100 in to gear much less find neutral because it seems the shifter is loose. before i bought it i went for a test ride with the guy and it ran great except he was really jerkin the shifter around to switch gears. this is my first stick shift vehicle and i need to fix this before i can drive it.
background- the shifter was relocated from the steering column to the floor.
i also need to relocate the gas tank from behind the seat considering im very tall and need more leg space.
any ideas or help would be appreciated

Relocating the tank will net you 0.00" in legroom.

Buy a new shifter. The one you have cant be rebuilt unless you know just exactly what it is. If it is that sloppy it has been bent folded spindled and generally mutilated.

Most aftermarket three speeds are junk when new let alone when clapped out for abuse.

Great reference back to the early pc days. Do Not FOLD SPINDLE or MUTILATE. The punch cards that used to be sent out with billing and such with the old PCs. Not many people under 50 probably even know what that reference even refers to.:p
