Engine noise
 

My 2002 Lightning several months ago developed an engine noise. Most who have listened to it say it's a lifter. The supposed mechanic at an authorized dealer said it was a burned piston. (Also said because it had a chip that Ford probably would refuse to cover it on warranty.)

Mind you, that was about 7,000 miles ago. It continues to perform very well (a 13.6 in the quarter with not that good a reaction time), no burning oil or leaks.

A race engine builder said he, too, thought it was a lifter and suggested going from the recommended 5-20 to 15-30 or 15-40. My oil change guy said not to do it.

So now I'm confused. Has anyone else changed oil weights and, if so, has it caused any problems. Any suggestions would be most appreciated. Thanks.

First of all, our trucks have over head cams, they don`t have lifters they have lash adjusters, if you really burned a piston I don`t think your truck would be running all that great 7000 miles later, the noise could also be a loud fuel injector, as for the oil, some people are using 0w-30 or 10w-30, do not use 15-30 or 15-40 in your truck its to heavy. I hope this helps you out a little.
