Fuel tank float repair

I discovered a crack about a quarter of an inch long in the float after I removed the sending unit from my tank. Has anyone ever tried to repair one of the brass floats? I have been contemplating trying to soldier the crack but I was worried about any fumes that might be inside the float causing the float to burst when heat is applied. I have a small propane torch but I think a soldering iron would work better as it would keep the heat isolated to just the spot needed repair.

Does anyone have any experience or opinions on whether or not this is worth an attempt? I can't find anyone locally that sells just the float and I do not want to spend $62 for the whole sending unit when all I need is the float.

Pop, I replace them whenever I need to drop the tank on one that has that style float, and they are less than $10 bucks from the dealer ship. Its good insurance.

I agree with southern, I would just replace it. It blowing up is very small, especially if you soak it in water but for 10 bucks I would not even fool with it.

It would definitely be worth $10 if we had a competent dealership close by. The problem is the local ones have a bunch of idiots and teenagers in the parts departments and at the only good one within 60 miles the people in the parts department act like they would rather be bound, gagged, then shot than fool with you.The last time I went there it took 3 hours to buy 2 plastic clips that connect the heated hoses to the heater core in my 01 F150
