86 F250 Diesel Transmission Problems

hi. i have a 1986 Ford F-250 6.9L Diesel. great truck. ive had it little over two weeks and the transmission went out. i dont much like the 3 spd. im wondering if an aod would bolt right up to my engine or if i will have to do alot of modifications. should i just stick with the three spd and rebuild it or would it be possible to get an aod?

You could do an E4OD with an aftermarket trans controller. I don't think they ever put an AOD behind an IDI...

Heck they never put an AOD behind a 351 from the factory. Tranny is to weak in stock form to take the torque.

Besides, not the same bell housing bolt patern. Your only choices for autos behind these diesels is the C6 witch you currectly have, and the E4OD.

Won't the 4R100 bolt up to it?

IDIDieselJohn 03-08-2013 09:52 PM

It sure will!

the 4r100 is the E40D upgraded and renamed.sadly with flaws of it's own introduced though.
(a few easy changes and they can work behind the idi with oem controllers.)

Best options are a T19 or ZF5....

If I could find a zf 5 4x4,I have a flawless e4od behind my 7.3 rite now I will be selling.58,000 on a rebuild.

no overdrive is simply going bolt up behind your 6.9.
I had the three speed auto and hated that thing, I put an e4od in it.
it took the after market controler
diffrent drive lines
I had to make my own crossmember
I was lucky that my speedomer cable streached to fit.

Howdy Y'all,
I have the same question about upgrading my C6 to an AOD to increase my fuel mileage and drop my rpms. Tell me if I'm wrong, but from what I gather from y'all the E4OD is the best way to go as the replacement for the C6. I have a 1986 Ford F250 with the 6.9L Diesel and C6, and a Banks Sidewinder Turbo System from the engine to the tailpipe. What all am I going to have to do to make the switch correctly??? The truck only has 155,000 Original Miles on it, so would you go with a NEW Jasper E4OD or just find a fairly low mileage used one??

IDIDieselJohn 03-10-2013 07:49 PM

I'd go find a Rebuilt E4OD. A stock E4OD won't last very long, heck some didn't even make 100k before needing rebuilt.

You'll just need the tranny, and cross member, and a stand alone computer for it, and your set! I think you'll have to shorten your driveshaft as well, as I remember reading the E4OD is a big heavy long transmission compared to the little C6.

Yes, the E4OD is the best way to go if you want an AT. If you want a 5spd MT, the zf5 is the best way to go.

When you say "stand alone computer", what year range will I need to get this from?? Also, will this swap run me about the same as going with the Gear Vendors setup, roughly $3,000.00???

IDIDieselJohn 03-10-2013 08:27 PM

You have to order a stand alone computer. Never came on these trucks.

And yes roughly the same. But as a bonus to the E4OD over the C6/GV is the E4OD has a locking torque converter while the C6 doesn't...... personally I'd go with a C6/GV but that's my old fashion ass :D

bashby 03-10-2013 08:27 PM

With the gearvendors and a c6 you still don't have a lockup converter.
