Econoline dip stick
 

How can I tell if I have the correct dip stick? I recently bought a 1965 Econoline with the 240 ci engine. I found a lively discussion thread from a couple of years ago regarding oil capacity of the L6 engines, and concluded that with an oil change I'd need at least 5 qts. and likely a little more. It turns out that with 5 qts (and filter change), the dip stick shows it to be WAY over-filled. I drained about a quart out to get it down to "full". So, either there is 2 inches of crud in my oil pan, or I have the wrong stick, or ......what? The dip stick in the van is about 13 3/4 inches long (measuring from where the top of the tube rests), with the full mark about 1 5/16 inches from the tip. No part numbers on the stick. Can anyone confirm this is what the stick is supposed to be, or suggest why 5 qts over-filled the oil pan? Thanks. kjhales

There are different sticks for different vehicles. Some sticks go into the pan and some go into the block. Some tubes are longer than others.

Fill the engine with the right amount of oil. Run it a while to get the oil in the filter, then shut it off and check the level. Make a mark on your dipstick. That's the new full level.
