Transmission and Motor mounts 56 Ford F-100
 

Anyone have any experience mounting a 292 Y-Block with an AOD transmission to a 56 Ford F-100 stock frame? Its approximately 50" from the front motor mount to the rear transission mount. Some of the stock Y-Blocks and automatic transmission were mounted at the front of the motor and the rear of the tranny tailshaft with a set of "stabilizer" rod on each side of the engine block to the frame. Im thinking I need something in the area of the transmission to engine block area to help support the engine and transmission. The stablizier rods used in thrunderbirds andd mustangs might be a little too light to provide adequate support.

If i were doing it i would get a custom or even universal cross member that went from frame rail to frame rail underneath the engine to make use of the side motor mounts. Then get an adjustable one for under the rear of the AOD trany. Just place the engine on it and move it forward or back to where radiator , exhuast ect. all fit , then secure it in place. You can get the crossmembers at a lot of places like speedway auto ect.

I got the AOD mounted to the Y block and installed the engine/tranny and cab today. With just the stock front motor mount and the custom cross member at the rear of the AOD, the engine is too unstable. I had originally planned on using stock thunderbird stabilizer rods running from each side of the engine block to the frame rails. I am now convinced thats not a good option. I will plan on using custom mounts to secure engine to frame rails or fabricated cross member frame rail to frame rail. Thanks for your advise.

Not only is it unstable but it puts to must stress on the area where the trany is bolted to the engine, it will break loose . How do i know ? Been there and done that with a chevy 350 motor mounts in front and trany mount at the end of the tail shaft housing. I was lucky i saw the cracking when it was parked not when i was driving it. I was trying to fit the engine in a vehical that had the steering gear in the way of the side mounts. Junked that project.

Drag cars will use engine mount plates in front of and behind the engine block. You could probably work up something like this between the engine and trans to create your own stable mid mount to work in conjunction with your existing ones.
