Can you disable regen and DEF with a tuner, while leaving everything in place?

Say you wanted to disable the regen cycle and the DEF, can you do so leaving all those components in place if you ran a tuner that allows you to disable them?

In short, no.

You would need to remove the DPF (Rocketship as I like to refer to it), install a straight pipe and disconnect the DEF and block off the EGR.

You can run a tuner with the DPF on, but you can't disable regen's or stop using DEF doing so.

ah, that's too bad

It's not that difficult to remove the dpf.

And the EGR is required as well? Define, "not that difficult". I don't have access to a shop anymore, so any work I'd do would be crawling under the truck.

I can't speak to other tuners but with the spartan you can leave the egr equipment on. The tuner just shouts it off.
I assume you can't do the same thing with the dpf and "starship" because it would clog and cause probs.
as Andrew said its not that hard to take it out. Mine took about 2 hours to take out and another 45 min to put the delete pipe back in.
All you do is unplug the sensors and unbolt it. The hardest part for me was getting the rubber hangers to come off.

.

You don't have to remove the egr, just unplug it. Block off plates would be a good idea though. I removed my dpf in a 24 by 24 garage, took couple hours, left the truck on the floor, wasn't too hard at all.

Are you saying the block off plates are a good idea because coolant is still circulating? Good to know on the DPF that I can do it in condo parking

That's what I was thinking, if it's coded out, then why couldn't we leave the equipment on (like the DEF)?

You can run dpf present tunes, get the extra hp, but the dpf will still collect the soot and will need to regen to burn it off. If you turn the dpf off with the tuner and leave the dpf on the truck you will clog it for sure as the filter will still be collecting soot and won't be burning it off.

WD-40 or similar applied to the rubber hangers prior to disassembly makes them much easier to remove.

UGA33 01-22-2013 07:29 PM

I unbolt the actual hanger from the frame then remove them after its out from under the truck off the exhaust. Has always been easier for me that way. I would definitely drop the UREA tank and clean it out of any remaining fluid if I was going to disable the system. When that stuff sets for too long, it turns into a crystallized mess.

Those rubber mounts come off pretty easy with a big ol' screwdriver.

2ndStroke 01-22-2013 08:31 PM

I used my 17 inch pry bar, pry the rubber hangers off the hanger brackets, super easy.

Brake-kleen is best and it evaporates w/o leaving any residue behind.
