Mud Chains?
 

I was wondering if any of you all have experience with good mud chains (or snow chains that work well in mud)?

My wife and I have a tree farm near Jackson TN that I work on from time to time. This work involves a little of everything--construction, gravel road work, brush clearing, timber work, you name it. Generally when I go, I take my F350 V10 4x4 SRW putlling a 60-hp Kubota. There are places on the property that are impassable to not only the truck, but to the 4x4 tractor as well.

That said, I've been slowly building up the trucks off-road chops from a work-truck standpoint. Right now I'm looking at the tires. The truck came with with 35x12.5x18 Nitto Grapplers installed on the stock rims. Because the property is 700 miles from where we live, I swapped the Grapplers for an inexpensive set of Continental's in 275/70R18. However, all 8 tires are now nearing the end of their lives so I want to get a good set of AT tires, but still need to settle on size, etc. But that is for another thread!

Anyway, if there are any good mud chains that can be quickly installed for slow (<15mph) off-road use, this would allow my tire selection to be a little more road-friendly...something in 275/70/R18 like BFG's new Rugged Terrain's (NOT their old Rugged *Trail*'s). Otherwise, I'd need to get either AT's or AT T/A's w a bigger footprint--probably sized like the Grapplers. That really cuts down on the fuel economy!

Don't have any experience with mud chains, but for your AT tire I would recommend Kuhmo Road Venture a/ts, I've had a few sets on my personal trucks and the business trucks and they're a damn good tire for a decent price.

For mud chains, you want the largest diameter links in the cross links you can find.

I've used (on all 4 wheels) chains like these extensively in mud in the mountains of VA, hauling heavy loads of firewood and whatnot.
