1960 59? Super Duty on the brain

So over the weekend was out on an errand and took a couple wrong turns on purpose and found a few old trucks!
ya I know it's dangerous for me to leave the house alone without a strict travel plan, destination time and route... :-X04

found some typical 48-52 F-1's 2's 3's an F6.. boring stuff... ;)
but then I happen on to a 1960 Super Duty , may have been a 59?? I didn't get real close to it. Anyway I have always loved those years "Super Duty" trucks, They are so Awesome!
Anyway I was starting to look up the owners names so I could make contact to see if it was available to buy... :-wink what am I thinking. What would I do with one of those beast's? besides I already have more big trucks than I should but I just can't help it... Maybe I need a vacation or some help...
I didn't get any pictures but looks like this one just for reference.
Ford Super Duty | Flickr - Photo Sharing!

I haven't been on this forum for a little while, how many 60 Super Duty Owners do we have here? feel free to post up pictures. I would love to see them to help ease my mind. :-X21

I love this truck. ;)

NumberDummy 01-09-2013 06:05 AM

1960's have a two piece grille. Upper chrome or painted, lower chrome or painted is a checker board aka egg crate design,

is this only for the super duty of these years or the regular trucks too? I thought the yellow one above was a 60? but I dont see the two part grill?
I also was under the impression that the 1960 super duty had the same grill as the 59?
there does not seem to be very much info on these beasts or many of them around.
thanks
Josh

You are correct Josh, the ND likes to speak in half truths. The 1960 F 700 thru F 1100's used the 59 grille. Lighter F100 thru F 600's used the new '60 2 piece grill. There is info out there, I recommend you purchase the bible "FORD TRUCKS SINCE 1905" by James Wagner, Ford Engineer.

78_f800crewcab4x4 01-13-2013 12:40 AM

I'm building a 60 super duty. Yes the 59 and 60 use the 59 grille, but only 60s have the super duty written on the hood. You can source the super duty script from the later trucks.

tripleframe 01-13-2013 07:29 PM

Checked the books, another change for 1960 was the use of a new Ford crest emblem on center of the hood. The '59 used a different style crest.Don't get your info on these trucks from Flicker comments!http://i1280.photobucket.com/albums/...ps5670a712.jpg

oaklandford 01-14-2013 12:33 PM

Thats right, forget flicker and all the other wimpy truck sites out there, I want my info from Tripleframe:-X03 By the way, Tripleframe are you into 2nd generation Mustangs by any chance?

real550A 06-01-2013 03:58 PM

So, here's one I'm working on obtaining presently. What do I have here?
It has the SD hood scoop, and saddle tanks, but no holes in the hood where the SD script would be. 59?

Louisville Joe 06-01-2013 05:29 PM

Remember that 'Super Duty' refers to the engine (401, 477, or 534), not the truck model. F-700 through F-800's would look the same, but would not have the 'Super Duty' script and use the old Lincoln Y-block engine.

real550A 06-01-2013 05:50 PM

Thanks for the reply....that explains alot. Would the Lincoln engined trucks
have the hood scoop? My '60 F-750 does not, but this single axle semi does.

jmadsen 06-02-2013 11:10 AM

Thats a nice looking truck.

Keep us posted on it and pictures of it coming home.

I still havent gone to see the super duty I found. I did talk to the owners son on the phone and sounds like it could be for sale.. hopefully in the next few weeks I'll get that way to see it closer and get some pictures to post.
Not sure what I would do with one of those beasts if I had one though. They sure are cool to look at though! :) :)

real550A 06-02-2013 04:49 PM

Same with me....I sure don't need it, but I hear it calling me!

Super Duty's come in various configurations, but this T 950 ( tandem) was the top of the food chain in '59. The 401 477 534 indentification was on the side hood emblem. Unfortunately, these were sold in very low numbers and are very hard to find today. This was a turn key drive away truck when sold at auction in the mid 80's.Wish I had the room for this long wheel base electric power pole hauler then.Attachment 200602

You are getting another one?

real550A 06-03-2013 02:06 PM

Yeah, I really don't need it, but I really like the big trucks, and this one is right in the neighborhood. I still haven't tracked down the owner, but I'm
watching for him. The plates are long expired, so I don't think it's going too far. If I can come to a suitable price, I'll grab it.

tripleframe 06-05-2013 08:01 PM

Super Duty trivia for those interested.http://i1280.photobucket.com/albums/...psf2ec7497.jpg

jmadsen 06-06-2013 12:08 AM

Sweet trucks. Love those old pictures.

Real550A

So you found a truck that really needs to be adopted (by you) :) here is what id do to start tracking down the owner.
First. If you can identify which property/parcel its on. Look at google earth images etc, look at adjacent parcels to get its relative position

Then check your local county recorders office. (Lots of county recorders offices have online maps and. )Basic ownership maps that hopefully you could access from the internet, if not make a trip to their office and get the owners name and mailing addresse on the parcel from them.

Look them up in phone book, or if not listed you at least have an addresse thet they send tax notices to.

Good luck, let us know how that turns out too.

Btw. Ive never done any of the above for a truck... :)
Ok ok so your onto me. Just remember I can stop anytime I want to.

Well if its too far gone to repair I need another pair of fenders for my dually styleside bed. haha.

If you get another one that would be a sweet fleet you have started!

real550A 06-07-2013 05:35 AM

Yeah, I'm going to try a little harder to talk to the owner in the next couple weeks.
I actually could use a single axle tractor around here, once in a while, and this one
would fit right in with the matching grille and all. Ha!

You should post a pic of it when you see it next. Also find a hot blonde to pose next to it if you can please.

The 401 477 534 indentification was on the side hood emblem.
Tripleframe- I think that's what I'm looking at. If I remember correctly, it has "401" on the side hood emblem flags.
Here's a shot of the "business end" of the truck:

tripleframe 06-08-2013 11:05 PM

Wow, that looks like a time capsule there. Yes, you have a "Super Duty" tractor with the necessary air brake option. By the looks of the front and rear axle, you should have an F 850. This was the lightest of the single axle tractors available with the super duty engine, F 1100 was the heaviest single axle tractor.

rummur s.c. 06-08-2013 11:44 PM

Tripleframe, do you know what the gvwr of a 1100 truck was? I've never seen one..

F 1100's are very hard to find. The (5) says formerly optional, now standard. The F1100's came with a Timken U-200 or Timken U-300 29,000 lb double reduction rear axle. To put in perspective, 23,000 lb is the industry standard today.Attachment 200540

Went by the "time warp" today. No one around anywhere. If you look closely, you can read the "401" on the tail of the emblem.

It would be easier to read the 401 if the trim paint wasn't faded out.Attachment 200538

Heck, I'm lucky the whole thing wasn't painted orange!

big job 06-11-2013 05:01 AM

Boy did I log some miles in those, 5X4 534 ten wheel dump trucks and
we had two with V6 bone shaker Cummins (gutless) these were the
king of the highway, 534 blow the doors off any other truck who cared
at $0.30 a gal and it could do a saddle tank a day maybe 100 gal.

This Custom Cab S.D. has the 15,000 lb front axle and the 38,000 lb rears, which brings the GVWR to 51,000 lbsAttachment 200510

One earning money back in the day. Has lighter 5 spoke front axle and may or may not be a dual drive tandem, many were tag axles.Attachment 200472

Sweet truck.
I still have yet to go see that super duty, I will hopefully soon. Been trying to get back in touch With a guy down the street from it that has some other parts I need.

Louisville Joe 07-19-2013 09:05 PM

Bet that tandem tractor from the 6/29 post is a diesel conversion. Note the air cleaner pre-cleaner sticking through the hood, exhaust stack, and oil stain on the fuel tank. Detroit 6V-53's fit nicely in those Fords.

Awesome thread. I had a 57. Don't remember a lot about it. Had juice brakes and single rear axle. Gas V8 and a long flat deck that I hauled a Jap Cat about the size of a D4 on over a mountain. Was all she could do but did it well till I ran out off gas and went backwards till she found a flat spot the brakes would hold her on. And this at night on a secondary old logging road. Some of the dumb stuff we did in our younger days. I wonder how I made it to 60.

These trucks are epic warriors of the past. Save them and carve our fathers' names in stone.

real550A 08-01-2013 04:07 PM

Wow, big back window, Custom Cab. I wonder what other little options it
has? I'm in total lust, but that doesn't take much at my age!
