Reverse lights problem

My lights don't come on when I put the truck in reverse. I have to hit the right "spot" on the column gear selector for them to come on. Meaning, the truck will be in reverse with no lights on. If I jiggle the gear selector they'll sometimes come on. I failed my inspection but have one month to fix this problem. Is there a switch or something I can change out? The reverse lights do work, so there is no fuse broken or anything. 351W/C6 F-250. Thanks guys.

You didn't say what year your truck is, but the switch is almost certainly on the side of your transmission, where the shift linkage comes in. See this thread for more information: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...l#post11749087

I changed my switch out last year, and other than having a terrible time with the electrical connector, it was a piece of cake. I was able to source a NOS switch from Green Sales.

Sorry. It's an 86

Ditto on the switch. You might try adjusting it first. But, odds are a new one is needed. Not to hard to change out, Was on the side of my 86 F250 C-6 trans.

Is this what I need to mess with?

I just replaced this 2 days ago. 3 bolts. The hardest part was removing cable housing. part about 30 dollars. When replacing, put truck in neutral. You will need to put a drill bit end (not sure which one, I used a dart, prob not best tool), to line up the three holes.

FYI, I had exact same back up light issue, and they now work great.

Actually, if the lights do come on when you nudge the shifter close to reverse, it sounds like it's just out of adjustment.
