Towing Mileage

Just took two trips with my 12 F-150 EB. Here's the results: First was a 300 mile trip here in N.C. heading east from Newton N.C. to Raleigh N.C. and back. Going over @66 mph, got best of 20 mpg. Coming back @ 70 mph got 19.4 mpg. (no load in bed & no trailer) Starting mileage was 1500 on OD. Two weeks later, heading south to Fl. towing a 1600 lb. empty trailer w/about 480 lbs. in bed got an average of 16.4mpg, @ average of 69 mph. Coming back w/a 91 fox body on the trailer and about same amount of weight in bed got best of 13.4 mpg, again going 69 mph. Truck is a: 2012 F-150 EB/CC/4WD/6.5 bed /3:31 Gear. (no mods) The Fl. trip was around 1450 miles down and back. Considering weight of these trucks I'm happy with the results. Now the OD is over 3000 miles. I did change the oil prior to the first trip. (1400)

Just returned from a trip from Texas to New Mexico, making a big loop around the state towing an 8,000 lb travel trailer. Of the total mileage shown, 90% is towing. I typically tow at 65-70.

Oh, truck is 4x4 CC, 6.5 bed 3:73 gears 2011 model.

The results look great to me !!!

I'm happy with them. My diesel (traded for the EcoBoost) towing the same travel over the same routes at the same time of year returned exactly the same fuel economy. Performance wise I'm as happy towing with the EcoBoost as the diesel - and it's a heck of a lot quieter.

Could you state the "same fuel econmy" in numbers?

I'm shopping around.

Gonna be dang close to 10 mpg towing and 18-20 empty mpg

paulm 01-10-2013 03:52 PM

typically my 6.0 would get 11.5-12.5 towing. I'm getting 11.9 consistently towing with the Ecoboost. Empty I would get around 16-17 in the 6.0 diesel and with the Ecoboost I get 17-18. Oddly enough after I returned from the trip that I referenced before I am getting 19.5-21 on the Ecoboost. I can't imagine what changed but it is holding there over the past two tanks.

I still can't believe how well this motor tows. I've owned 460s, V10s and diesels. The Ecoboost easily pulls as well as the big gas engines and not much differently than the diesel 6.0.

BTW - here is the rig while towing.

I'm pulling a 6000lb 14ft enclosed trailer on a daily basis, putting approximately 400miles per week. Getting roughly 11mpg city/side road to side road rural driving, and have got as high as 16.8mpg on a strictly 55mph hwy only driving. Been super happy with my boost overall.

11 city and 16.8 on the highway pulling a 6000 lb trailer?

That sounds pretty friggen good!

I just visited 2 Ford dealers today and neither had any DRW trucks stock.

I did see an 2008 Diesel F450 King Ranch automatic 4X4 DRW with 81,000 miles on it across the freeway at the Dodge dealership.

Both the Ford and the Dodge crew cab trucks were the same size but the Ford rear seat seemed bigger, as in more elbow, head and a smidgen more leg room.

Both trucks made me feel like Fred Flintstone having not been in a new truck for a decade or so!

I have a 2013 Max Tow Lariat 4x4 on order with the 3.5 EcoBoost, and this info sounds encouraging. I tow a 33' TT, and get about 7-8 mpg with my present 5.4 while towing it, speeds around 70 mph on the highway.

TOOLOUD1 01-23-2013 06:31 PM

Efx4 you should get close to 10 mpg towing with you're EB

efx4 01-27-2013 03:35 PM

That would be a big improvement for me TOOLOUD1.

I get 14 pulling my atv at 75 and 10 pulling my XP800 Ranger w/windshield at 75

Driving 70 I get 10.5mpg pulling my Polaris RZR on a 6x12 trailer. My buddy has a V-6 non ecoboosted Explorer and he drove the same route with a RZR XP-4 and a two foot longer trailer. He got over 13 mpg and he had 6th gear locked out.
If I tow my 12' tall toyhauler at 60mph mpg drops to 7-9 mpg.
I am not impressed at all with the towing mpg of my ecoboost (3.73 with max tow, 4x4 SCAB). If boost kicks in mpg drops like a rock.......
