3 speed on a 289
hello all, i currently have a 60 F100 with 223 and 3 on the tree......i have a buddy who has a rebuilt 289 out of a 65 falcon with a 4 speed bell housing bolted to it...will my stock 3 speed work on the combination without any alterations.......looks like the bolt patterns are the same, and i really want to leave the 3 on the tree...
thanks in advance |
Your 223 and an early 289 would have the "square" bell to trans pattern.
The other concern would be input shaft length. You'll have to measure that one. The clutch disc can be changed to fit the input shaft spline if need be, and a different pilot bushing can be found or made if need be. You might have a direct fit--that would be an excellent result! |
The truck 3 speed has a longer input shaft, also uses a larger throw out bearing and fork then the 289 bell housing.

Late 289: All 1965's from 8/23/1964, 1966/68: 6 bell housing bolt holes. jestr73: Better verify that 289 is a 289. 1965 Falcon's came with 289's, 1964 Falcon's came with 260's. 1965 Mustang's before 8/23/1964 came with both 260 & 289's. |
thanks for the input guys....its definately a 289, can't pass up the deal so it looks like i will go the 4-speed route and put it on the floor...

understood, will need motor mounts as well as a few other things
|
ok, been thinking about this again......is there a bell housing i can use that would allow me to use the stock 3 speed on the 289 to keep the column shift....

IF you have the same (old square pattern) pattern for trans to bell, then you just need to check the input length and throwout bearing issues per the other prior post. That the motor mount issue. SBF uses longer inputs compared to FE for example, but that does not mean it matches the older 3 gear box you have. There is a later all synchro 3 speed that will bolt to a 289, not sure if the column shifter linkage would work. |
Ford type 3.03 3 speed manual all syncromesh trans introduced in 1963 as standard equipment in F100/250's, and specific engine Ford/Merc Passenger Cars including 223 I-6 (Galaxie), 221/260/289, 352/390.
289 also introduced in 1963. |
it is a 6 bolt 289....
i will search for that tranny..... thanks, i appretiate the help |
